Remedios National High School General Biology 2 PREPARED BY: JENNICA LYN N. BAGANG Teacher Taxonomy is the science of classification ✓ helps us organize and classify living organisms based on their similarities and differences. Systematics is the study of the diversity of organisms and their evolutionary relationships. ✓ aims to understand the evolutionary history and relationships among organisms. Image source: https://hbr.org/resources/images/article_assets/2022/06/Jun22_17_107813677.jpg Known as the “Father of Taxonomy” Linnaeus developed the binomial nomenclature system, where each species is given a two-part Latin name (genus + species). E.g. Homo sapiens Linnaeus introduced hierarchical classification, grouping organisms into categories such as kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species. Example, Animalia within Eukarya. ✓ PHYLUM: Subdivisions of kingdoms, representing major evolutionary lines within a kingdom. For example, Chordata within Animalia. ✓ CLASS: Subdivisions of phyla, representing distinct groups of organisms with shared characteristics. Example: Mammalia within Chordata. ✓ ORDER, FAMILY, GENUS, SPECIES: Successively smaller and more specific categories, with species being the most specific level. By comparing the genetic makeup of various organisms, scientists can infer how closely related they are and how they diverged over time. These trees depict the evolutionary history and relatedness of species based on shared characteristics, including molecular data, morphology, behavior, and more. Bioinformatics tools and algorithms help researchers extract meaningful insights from vast amounts of biological data, aiding in tasks like sequence alignment, genome assembly, and evolutionary analysis. It consists of a series of paired statements, each offering two choices that lead to further statements or identifications.
