They were always on the move, looking for food. About 12 000 years ago, they began to plant seeds and rear animals. The first animals they reared (raised) were sheep! It was the start of farming. Farming meant people could settle in one place. Over time, clusters of of dwellings grew = settlements hange E hange E XC di XC di F- t F- t PD PD or or ! ! Markets began. Villages grew around the markets Some villages had advantages over others (for example: easier to reach from many directions. These grew into towns The Industrial Revolution began in the 18th Century. Factories sprang up in or near towns with access to coal, water and other things. hange E hange E XC di XC di F- t F- t PD PD or or ! ! The towns grew into cities. Industry spread to other European countries, and the USA – so their towns and cities also grew. Today, Africa and Asian cities are growing fastest. hange E hange E XC di XC di F- t F- t PD PD or or ! ! W W O O N N Y Y U U B B to to It’s Urbanisation! ww ww om om k k lic lic C C.c.c w w tr re tr re.. ac ac k e r- s o ft w a k e r- s o ft w a Across the world, every week, 3 million people move from rural to urban areas. At the same time, many new babies are being born in the urban areas. So the % of the world’s population living in urban areas is increasing. This process is called urbanisation. hange E hange E XC di XC di F- t F- t PD PD or or ! ! They absorb nearby towns and even rural areas. A city with over 10 million people is called a megacity. In 2019 the world had 33 megacities. They are formed when major cities fuse together. The biggest is Tokyo, with over 37 million people hange E hange E XC di XC di F- t F- t PD PD or or ! !
