Pharmacology Made Easy Medication Information Table Anabolic Agents – teriparatide Category Information THERAPEUTIC USE Treat osteoporosis by stimulating new bone formation. Synthetic form of parathyroid hormone, which regulates calcium homeostasis, and mediates pathways that cause an increase in the number and length of survival of osteoblasts. Results in rate of bone formation exceeding rate of bone resorption. ADVERSE DRUG Hypertension, orthostatic hypotension, arthralgia, leg cramps, upper REACTIONS respiratory infections, angina, and hypercalcemia. INTERVENTIONS Monitor serum calcium level before beginning medication and one month after beginning, and follow-up monitoring should occur based on the client’s calcium levels. Monitor for manifestations of toxicity (nausea, vomiting, and orthostatic hypotension). If persistent hypercalcemia, the dosage should be decreased, or medication discontinued by prescriber. ADMINISTRATION 20 mcg subcutaneously once daily. CLIENT INSTRUCTIONS Teach subcutaneous self-injection technique. Inject into abdomen or thigh. Injection pen may be used for 28 days then discarded. CONTRAINDICATIONS History of osteosarcomas and in clients who are pregnant. PRECAUTIONS Renal calculi Conditions that increase risks of hypercalcemia.
