Socialization And social change How does socialization influence us and the world around us? Learning Outcomes By the end of this lesson, you should be able to: 01 Explain the concept of socialization. 02 Describe how we have been socialized. 03 Explain how socialization can be a barrier to or a for for social change. Discuss: In what ways did the way we socialize change during the pandemic? What about after the pandemic? What is socialization? How do you know how to act in a social setting? How do you acquire social skills? These skills were taught to you by your caregivers as a child and baby. This process is called socialization. How do we learn social norms? Socialization teaches us how to adapt and function in our society. These norms, or expected behaviours, can vary culture by culture, and region by region. They can even vary group by group. What is considered normal in one group, may not be considered typical behaviour in another. Example: In Canada, tipping at a restaurant in considered normal, and is expected. To not tip is a social faux pas, and you would be judged and scorned. However, travel to a country where this is not the norm, and you would be heavily judged, and probably misunderstood, if you tried to tip your server. Brainstorm: Who in your life has taught you social norms? Think beyond your childhood caregivers. Daycare workers Friends extended family bosses/coworkers Teachers Agents of Socialization In the circle in your notes, create a pie chart. How much has each group you identified influenced your life? Discuss Has the degree in which your family socializes you changed from childhood to being a teenager/young adult? How much influence on the way you interact with the world?
