Pandit Deendayal Energy University School Of Technology Civil Engineering Department 24HS102T Universal Human Values Assignment 1: Human Values and Process of Value Education Sr No. Questions 1. Define the following terms. 1. Values: A value is defined as a principle that promotes well-being or prevents harm.” Another definition is: values are our guidelines for our success—our paradigm about what is acceptable.” Personal values are defined as: “emotional beliefs in principles regarded as particularly favourable or important for the individual.” 2. Human Values: The value of a human being is the participation of human being in this order. Hence to understand the human values, we need to understand the human reality along with all that is there in that existence constituting the larger order, and the role of human being in the relationship with each and every unit in the existence. 3.Value Education: Character oriented education that instils basic values and ethnic values in one’s psyche are called ‘Value Based Education’. The subject that enables us to understand ‘what is valuable’ for human happiness is called value education. 4. Happiness (Sukh): Happiness may be defined as being in harmony/synergy in the state/ situation that I live in. “A state or situation in which I live, if there is harmony in it then I like to be in that state / situation. The state of liking is happiness.” It is a holistic and all-encompassing state of the mind that creates inner harmony. 5. Prosperity: The feeling of having or making available more than required physical facilities is prosperity. For prosperity, two things are required- (1) Identification of the required quantity of physical facilities, and (2) Ensuring availability / production of more than required physical facilities. We can be prosperous only if there is a limit to the need for physical facilities. If there is no limit what so ever be the availability he feeling of prosperity cannot be assured. Secondly, just assessing the need is not enough. We need to be able to produce or make available more than the perceived need. 6. Harmony: Harmony is a word that is mostly used in music where two or more notes are simultaneously played to produce a pleasant sound, which is similar to a situation in which two people can live together in a harmonious relationship. It gives them a feeling of happiness because their minds and emotions are in alignment with each other. It leads to peace and solidarity, which creates the right balance in a relationship. Two people are easily able to live together if they have a balanced way of thinking and work as a union. 7. Compatibility: Compatibility is a state in which two people can be together or live together without creating any conflicts or problems. Such people are called like-minded and similar as they think alike in most of the things. Interpersonal compatibility is a term used for two people who are compatible with each other in terms of being in a romantic relationship. Personality compatibility plays a vital role in the success or failure of any intimate relationship. Such people have a lot of similarities between them. They have different ideas that can coexist without creating any problems. 2. List out Types of Human Values and explain in details The main 5 Human Values_ The five human values, which can be found in all cultures, all societies and in all religions, are_ 1. Truth (Sathya) 2. Right Conduct (Dharma) 3. Love (Prema) 4. Peace (shanti) 5. Non- Violence (Ahimsa) These values are eternal; they are eternal essences, which elevate human life to its highest expression, its highest capacity 3. Explain in Details Types of Human Values. 1. Truth The desire to know the truth has prompted mankind to ask some of the great questions such as: Who am I? What is the purpose of life? How can I live fully in the present moment? Learning to speak the truth is a first and vital step in the formation of strong character. Voicing an untruth is an anti-social act and causes confusion in the mind of both the speaker and listener and leads to anti-social behaviours. Telling lies hurts ourselves as well as others in a subtle, but very real way. 2. Right Conduct Information is received through the five senses, i.e. smell, taste, sight, touch and hearing. When this information is referred to the conscience, the resulting action will be beneficial. Every action is preceded by a thought. If the thought is consciously seen and noted, it aims to assist and is unselfish, the action will be good for oneself and others. If our minds are busy, or we are daydreaming, the action may be useless, clumsy or harmful to ourselves and others. 3. Love Love is not an emotion, affected by the subconscious mind, but is a spontaneous, pure reaction from the heart. A beneficial energy (love) is directed towards the other person. As this energy flows through our own body first, it also enhances our own health. Love is unconditional positive regard for the good of another. It is giving and unselfish. It is the power of love which causes one person to wish happiness for another and take pleasure in their well- being. 4. Peace We smile when we are happy and contented. Contentment is gained when we cease to want to give ourselves all the apparent 'good' things conveyed to us through our five senses. Inner agitation stops and we are left feeling peaceful. When there is peace in the individual, there will be peace in the family, when there is peace in the family, there will be peace in the community. To learn self-esteem, calmness and freedom from anxiety are necessary. 5. Non-Violence When the former four values are practiced (i.e. the conscious mind is keenly aware, love is flowing, there is peace and action are right) and life is lived without harming or violating anything else. It is the highest achievement of human living and encompasses respect for all life living in harmony with nature, not hurting by thought, word or deed. 4. Explain Basic requirements for fulfillment of human aspiration. 5. Write short note on Harmony. Harmony is the basic foundation of a lasting coherent romantic relationship, filled with lots of love and affection, where both partners are always in complete agreement with each other. Both partners support and stand by each other under all kinds of circumstances and work together as a team, leaving no space for any sorts of problems such as quarrels, anger, stress, or tension. Harmony is a word that is mostly used in music where two or more notes are simultaneously played to produce a pleasant sound, which is similar to a situation in which two people can live together in a harmonious relationship. It gives them a feeling of happiness because their minds and emotions are in alignment with each other. It leads to peace and solidarity, which creates the right balance in a relationship. Two people are easily able to live together if they have a balanced way of thinking and work as a union. Harmony is complete when there are no clashes, and there is effortless support for each other and standing by each other. It is when there are no fights or arguments in a relationship and when both accept their flaws and do not point fingers at each other for their mistakes. Harmony in a relationship needs to be cultivated by both parties as is a team effort. It strengthens the bond in a relationship where it becomes so strong that the two people can’t live without each other. 6. Write Definition of Value Education and explain need of Value Education. Meaning of Value Education: Value Education is the education which enables to understand ‘what is valuable’ for human happiness. It is all about enabling a transformation in human beings to help them move from Animal Consciousness to Human Consciousness. NEED FOR VALUE EDUCATION: 1. Correct identification of our aspirations: The subject that enables us to understand ‘what is valuable’ for human happiness is called ‘value education’ (VE). Thus, VE enables us to understand our needs and visualize our goals correctly and also indicate the direction for their fulfilment. It also helps to remove our confusion and contradictions and bring harmony at all levels. 2. Understanding universal human values to fulfil our aspirations in continuity: Values form the basis for all our thoughts, behaviours and actions. Once we know what is valuable to us, these values become the basis, the anchor for our actions. We also need to understand the universality of various human values, because only then we can have a definite and common program for value education. Then only we can be assured of a happy and harmonious human society. 3. Complementarity of values and skills: To fulfil our aspirations both values and skills are necessary. When we identify and set the right goals and produce in right direction. This is known as value domain, the domain of wisdom, and when we learn and practices to actualize this goal to develop the techniques to make this happen in real life, in various dimensions of human endeavour (struggle). This is known as the domain of skills. Hence, there is an essential complementarity between values and skills for the success of any human endeavour. Ex: I want to lead a healthy life. Only wishing for good health will not help me keep my body fit & healthy and without having understood the meaning of health, I will not be able to choose things correctly to keep my body fit and healthy. 4. Evaluation of our beliefs: Each one of us believes in certain things and we base our values on these beliefs, be they false or true which may or may not be true in reality. These beliefs come to us from what we read, see, hear, what our parents tell us, what our friends talk about, what the magazines talk about, what we see on TV etc. Value Education helps us to evaluate our beliefs and assumed values. 5. Technology and human values: The present education system has become largely skill-based. The prime emphasis is on science and technology. However, science and technology can only help to provide the means to achieve what is considered valuable. It is not within the scope of science and technology to provide the competence of deciding what really is valuable. Value Education is a crucial missing link in the present education system. Because of this deficiency, most of our efforts may prove to be counterproductive and serious crises at the individual, societal and environmental levels are manifesting. 7. Write short note on Compatibility. Compatibility is the key to a successful and enduring romantic relationship, by naturally aligning lifestyle choices and configuration of values between two people. It is composed of many different factors and aspects such as similar interests, personal views, opinions, beliefs, theories, past histories, and cultural backgrounds, where different ideas, behaviours, practices, or habits can coexist almost seamlessly and flawlessly without any conflicts. Compatibility is a state in which two people can be together or live together without creating any conflicts or problems. Compatibility between two people means they can exist together or live together successfully in a harmonious relationship without any problem s, trouble, or conflict. It is a feeling of sympathetic understanding, equality and respect for each other. Compatibility between two people means the capability of existing or performing in a harmonious or congenial combination. It means that two people have things in common, the more things they have in common, the more compatible they are going to be. 8. Explain the Process of Value Education. The Process of value education is through Self-Exploration Self-Exploration: Self-exploration involves two steps: 1. Verification of the proposals based on our natural acceptance 2. Experiential validation by living according to it. 9. Explain Understanding happiness and Prosperity. Happiness: Happiness may be defined as being in harmony/ synergy (the added success, energy, or power gained by two people or organizations working together, which is better than the result achieved by them working separately) in the states/ situations that we live in. Happiness is being in a state of liking. Unhappiness is a lack of this synergy or harmony. To be in a state of disliking is unhappiness. Happy situations comprise of feelings such as trust, respect, confidence etc. All these feelings carry an element of harmony in them. Hence, they make us feel relaxed and happy. On the other hand, feelings like failure, disrespect, lack of confidence, doubt etc. lack the element of harmony and hence make us unhappy. Prosperity: In addition to happiness, we also aspire for adequate fulfillment of our bodily needs i.e., the need for physical facilities. These Physical Facilities are the material things we use in order to fulfill the needs of our body. Having enough physical facilities gives us a feeling of prosperity. If one has more than required number of physical facilities then a prosperous person thinks of right utilization, nurturing the other using the extra physical facilities Prevailing notions of Happiness and Prosperity: In the modern world, the desire for physical facilities has become unlimited. The physical facilities are no longer seen as objects fulfilling bodily needs but as a means of maximizing happiness. This unlimited desire for physical facilities has become anti-ecological and anti-people endangering human survival itself. 10. Write down basic requirements for fulfilment of Human Aspirations. To find out what our happiness and prosperity are related to, let’s start with a very simple exercise. Let’s make a list of everything we want today and see what these wants or aspirations in turn depend on. Below is a sample list. Now, you should go ahead and make your list! Yours might Be longer or shorter, it may have different things than the one we have below: List of Want.
