PROF. Dr. MONA HASSAN MOHAMMED ALI prof. AND HEAD of Anatomy & Embryology DEPARTMENT FOMSCU INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES:  1. Joints: Structural and functional classification 2. Structure of a typical synovial joint 3. Types of synovial joints 4. Terms for descriptions of movements JOINTS  Joint is a point of connection between two bones  Strands of connective tissue, ligaments, hold the bones together and ensure the stability of joints General Function of Joints: - Hold the skeleton together - Allow for increased mobility and flexibility of the skeleton. CLASSIFICATION OF JOINTS  Joints can be classified based on: -function (what kind of movement they allow). -structure (what material is found in the joint and if is there a joint cavity present).  Structural: Based on major connective tissue type that binds bones  Fibrous  Cartilaginous  Synovial  Functional: Based on degree of motion  Synarthrosis: Nonmovable  Amphiarthrosis: Slightly movable  Diarthrosis: Freely movable Joint mobility comparison Note that as mobility decreases, stability increases.
