The American Psychological Association (APA) citation style is the most commonly used format for manuscripts and formal papers in the social sciences including healthcare. Times New Roman font Follow the 7th edition APA publication guidelines LANGUAGE IN AN APA PAPER SHOULD BE: Clear: be specific in descriptions and explanations Concise: condense information when you can Plain: use simple, descriptive adjectives and minimize figurative language Active Voice: “The author asked participants….” Not “The participants have been asked ….” Personal Pronouns: Avoid the use of “we, they, their, our, he/she/his, these, etc” Title Page Paper Header & Page # All CAPS, title flush left + page number flush right. As you can see this has a structure that is important to follow. Immunological Renal Diseases This is a level two heading. Acute Glomerulonephritis This is a level three heading. End stage renal disease. This is a level four heading. End stage renal disease. This is a level five heading. IN-TEXT CITATIONS Why do we use in-text citations? If I cite something, does it have to be on the reference list? 4 8/1/2024 PLAGIARISM : GIVING CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE PLAGIARISM Plagiarism Self-Plagiarism “Act of presenting the words, ideas, or “The presentation of your own previously images of another as your own” (APA, published work as original” (APA, 2020, 2020, p. 254). p.256) IN-TEXT CITATION: PARAPHRASING There are different ways you can use in-text citations when paraphrasing. It depends on what and how the writer wants to convey the material. Apples come in a variety of different colors (Nica et al., 2018). According to Simmons (2017), red apples are her favorite. According to Simmons, red apples are her favorite (2017). 5 8/1/2024 IN-TEXT CITATIONS: DIRECT QUOTE There are also different ways to do an in-text citation when directly quoting “Apples are red and the sky is blue” (Nica, 2017, p. 1). According to Simmons (2017), “skies are blue and pigs fly too” (para.4). Nica argued that “pigs will never fly” (2017, p.2). WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF TWO ARTICLES DRAW THE SAME CONCLUSION? When a citation includes two or more works, order them in the same way they would appear in your reference list and separate with a semi-colon. (Nica, 2015; Simmons, 2018). This would also be true for multiple sources that appear to agree with the same conclusion when you are paraphrasing. Multiple sources just add credence to the reliability of the supporting evidence. CITING A WORK WITH TWO AUTHORS Depending on the way you cite a source with two authors, will determine how you write out that citation. According to Nica and Simmons (2017)….. Apples come in a variety of colors (Nica, & Simmons, 2017). Note how the “and” changes depending on how you do the citation 6 8/1/2024 CITING WORK WITH THREE OR MORE AUTHORS Apples come in a variety of colors (Nica et al., 2017). Remember the primary author is always listed first, do not alphabetize within the citation or for a reference entry. WHAT IF I DO NOT KNOW WHO THE AUTHOR IS? Who is responsible for the content? Is it coming from a website? How do I cite an organization? https://www.cdc.gov/flu/index.htm Reference Page Paper Header All CAPS, title flush left + page number flush right. References Alphabetical List all names up to 20 authors Year Title Source Where obtained 7 8/1/2024 Center the title (References) at the top of the page. Bolded. Double-space reference entries Flush left the first line of the entry and indent subsequent lines Order entries alphabetically by the surname of the first author of each work Hanging indent of 0.5 inch for each reference Invert authors’ names (last name first followed by initials) EX: Smith, J.Q. Capitalize only the first letter of the first word of a title and subtitle, the first word after a colon or a dash in the title, and proper nouns. EX: The perfectly formatted paper: How the Purdue OWL saved my essay. REFERENCE LIST Capitalize all major words in a journal title. Simmons, L. A. (2009).
