Psychological F. Cognitive G. Sociocultural Biological theory Adoption studies have shown that children from addicted parents are more likely to develop addictions, even if adopted. Twin studies have shown that in identical twins, if one develops an addiction, there is greater concordance toward addiction than fraternal. Biological theory Biological theory Psychodynamic theory Fragile core-ego is faced with the hedonic demands of the Id. Mature defense mechanisms for self-regulation (e.g., repression or humor) is limited to more primitive defensive strategies Psychodynamic theory Addictions may be viewed as the consequence of poor object relations Individuals with addiction may reach out for an “external regulator” (i.e., drug) Psychodynamic theory Adolescents are more likely to use drugs when they feel neglected by their parents. Adolescents are more likely not to use drugs when they feel their parents have authoritative styles.
