EASTMAN DENTAL HOSPITAL EDUCATION CENTRE DENTAL HYGIENE & DENTAL THERAPY Connective Tissue Self Assessment Workbook Teamwork Improving Kindness Safety 1 EASTMAN DENTAL HOSPITAL EDUCATION CENTRE DENTAL HYGIENE & DENTAL THERAPY Student name: Completed example Introduction This handbook should be used in conjunction with your lecture and PowerPoint on connective tissue. We strongly encourage you to complete the workbook in order to self assess that you have met the intended learning outcomes: By the end of this session students should be able to:  Outline and classify the types of connective tissue  Name and describe the non-cellular substrate of connective tissue  List and describe the cells of connective tissue  List and describe the fibres of connective tissue  State the characteristics of connective tissue 2 EASTMAN DENTAL HOSPITAL EDUCATION CENTRE DENTAL HYGIENE & DENTAL THERAPY Cells of Connective Tissue: Complete the table Cell type Fixed or  Describe the cell. Where is it derived from? Transient?  Where are they found?  What is their function? Plasma cells Transient  Plasma cells develop from B-lymphocytes (white blood cell)  Mostly found in lymph nodes  Enable development of immunity by producing and releasing specific antibodies into the blood and tissues Adipocytes Fixed  Also known as fat cells. Develop from fibroblast like cells.  Found singly or in groups in a variety of connective tissues, especially in adipose tissue  Storage of lipid Macrophages Fixed  Large irregular cells of immune cell. Also known as histiocytes.  Develop from white blood cells known as monocytes  They phagocytose pathogens and foreign bodies assisting in the immune system Mast cells Fixed  Derived from myeloid stem cell.  Found in loose connective tissue e.g. liver, spleen, around blood vessels  Contain granules of heparin and histamine: function?  Histamine: associated with allergic/hypersensitivity reactions. Enables constriction of bronchioles and vasodiation  Heparin: prevents coagulation of blood enabling blood flow to affected sites of inflammation in order 3 EASTMAN DENTAL HOSPITAL EDUCATION CENTRE DENTAL HYGIENE & DENTAL THERAPY that oxygen, nutrients and immune cells are delivered Fibroblasts Fixed  Large cells with irregular processes. Derived from primitive mesenchyme  Found in every tissue of the body.  Function: secretion of non-rigid extracellular matrix, collagen and fibres: collagen, elastin, fibronectin.  Active in wound healing, bind wounds/form granulation tissue post tissue destruction 4 EASTMAN DENTAL HOSPITAL EDUCATION CENTRE DENTAL HYGIENE & DENTAL THERAPY Fill in the table on Connective Tissue Fibres. Please add to the description with further details of each type of fibre: ConCoCConnective Tissue Fibres Fibre Type Description of fibre Location/found in which category of connective tissue? Elastic  Contain elastin Dense CT: Tendons, ligaments, specialized CT:  Undergo changes during life; cartilage degenerate if over-exposed to sun.  Fragment and disintegrate in elderly Reticular  These fibres crosslink to form a fine Liver, bone marrow, tissues of lymphatic network system  Contain collagen fibrils (as do collagen fibres) Collagen  ‘Banded’ in appearance Most abundant type of fibres in ECM (34% of  Contain collagen- amino acid total ECM)  Determines tissue function Tendons, ligaments 5 EASTMAN DENTAL HOSPITAL EDUCATION CENTRE DENTAL HYGIENE & DENTAL THERAPY Create a flowchart/spider diagram showing the different types of connective tissues. 6 EASTMAN DENTAL HOSPITAL EDUCATION CENTRE DENTAL HYGIENE & DENTAL THERAPY Complete the following tasks: 1. Name the types of connective tissue shown in the picture below. 2. Complete the tables: F E macrophage C Elastin fibre D B Adipocyte E A Fibroblast B capillary A Collagen fibre F C D 7 EASTMAN DENTAL HOSPITAL EDUCATION CENTRE DENTAL HYGIENE & DENTAL THERAPY 8 EASTMAN DENTAL HOSPITAL EDUCATION CENTRE DENTAL HYGIENE & DENTAL THERAPY 9
