urinary SYSTEM Objectives Enumerate the component of the urinary system Explain the anatomical structures of the urinary system Enumerate functions of urinary system. Corelate the function of the urinary system to its anatomical structure KIDNEYS  Number: 2 (right and left)  Shape: bean-shaped  Site: on both sides of the vertebral column below the ribs  Size: 1 x 2 x 4 inches. KIDNEYS  Features: 2 ends: Upper end (has supra-renal gland) Lower end. 2 borders: Outer (convex) Inner (concave and has hilum). 2 surfaces: anterior and posterior. KIDNEYS: Structure The nephron is the anatomical and functional unit of kidney  Number: one million nephrons per kidney  Each nephron is formed of glomerulus and tubule.  The tubule is differentiated into proximal convoluted tubules, loop of Henle, distal convoluted tubule and collecting duct.. URETERS  Two (right & left) fibromuscular tubes.  Length: 25 cm  Site: Upper part in the abdomen Lower part in the pelvis.  Function: carry urine from kidneys to urinary bladder. URINARY BLADDER:  Definition: hollow muscular organ  Site: in pelvic cavity behind symphysis pubis  Function: store urine  Shape:  Pyramidal in shape URINARY BLADDER: Pyramidal in shape having  Apex (anteriorly), attached to umbilicus by median umbilical ligament  Base (directed posteriorly)  Inner surface of the base is called trigone  Trigone receives the opening of both ureters URINARY BLADDER: Pyramidal in shape having  3 surfaces  The inferior angle:  Known as the neck  Surrounded by internal urethral sphincter (involuntary) MALE URETHRA  Length: about 8 inches (20 cm).  Beginning: at the neck of urinary bladder  parts: 1. Prostatic: 1.5 inches long 2. Membranous: 0.5 inch long (1.5 cm). surrounded by external sphincter 3. Penile (spongy): 6 inches long (15 cm).  Termination: tip of the glans penis FEMALE URETHRA:  Beginning: at the neck of urinary bladder  Length: about 1.5 inches (4 cm).  Termination: vestibule in front of vaginal orifice.
