Jonas was fascinated when he saw Jonas was frightened when he saw the the unidentified aircraft because he unidentified aircraft because it made everyone had never seen an aircraft that panic and become confused. Everyone else in his community was silently waiting for what close. Pilots were not allowed to fly would happen. The text states, “Jonas, looking over the community. The text around anxiously, had seen others --- adults as explains, “At first, he had been only well as children --- stop what they were doing fascinated. He had never seen and wait, confused, for an explanation of the aircraft so close, for it was against frightening event…He had been frightened the rules for Pilots to fly over the then. The sense of his own community silent, community.” (Lowry 1). Jonas was waiting, had made his stomach churn.” (Lowry so interested in the unidentified 1-2). Everyone else in Jonas’s community had aircraft because it was against the been confused and quiet when the unidentified aircraft flew over the community. This was an rules for them to fly over the odd occurrence for them. Ultimately, this made community. Therefore, he had Jonas feel frightened. never seen one up close. Asher reason for the public apology was because he was late. He explained this by telling the class that he got distracted by the crew separating some salmon near the hatchery. He explained, “‘I left home at the correct time but when I was riding along near the hatchery, the crew was separating some salmon. I guess I just got distraught, watching them.’” (Lowry 3-4). Asher’s reason for the public apology was that he was late due to getting distracted by the crew near the hatchery separating some salmon. Lily is a Seven whose feelings are usually straightforward, simple, and solvable. She describes how she felt strange and stupid when her class had visited another Childcare Center because the other kids there knew more than her class did. Lily grew angry at a boy from a visiting group who Jonas’s father is concerned about a didn’t follow the rules at the play area. When she new-child the he nurtures. The child isn’t considered the fact that he might’ve been new to the rules and probably felt strange, she began to growing as fast as he should and doesn’t feel sorry for him and the way she reacted. sleep well. Jonas’s father is concerned about him because the committee’s beginning to talk about releasing him. People could be released as a punishment. This was a final decision that showed failure. The elderly could be released, but this was a celebration of the life lived by them. Newchildren could be released, which was always very sad, especially for Nurturers. However, this was rare. From the words “given spouses,” I can infer that this society and its rule are very formal and function in an orderly manner. Everything seems to be planned out for a person. Even something like spouses are given to a person if they are found to be qualified for one. Words in the passage that best show that the Ceremony of Twelve is something important are “eyes wide”, “whispered”, and “awed voice.” The wide eyes show that the Ceremony of Twelve is something significant and worthy of one’s full attention. In addition, the whispering adds to the importance of the Ceremony. It is not like any other thing that people talk about. Finally, the awed voice in which Lily spoke showed how much she admired it. Clearly, the Ceremony of Twelve is something that matters to everyone in the community and they sort of look forward to it. Which “rule” is the speaker referring to? What does these words show us about Jonas? The “rule” that the speaker is referring to is the rule of not These words show that Jonas is extremely obedient to looking at the Naming list that contains the names that will be the rules of the community. Therefore, Jonas worries about what he all of the Nurturers loved to nurtur him will be assigned. because he giggled and laughed instead of crying. THE RECEIVER The Receiver was the most important Elder. The Receiver is so important that they live and work alone. Since rules were hard to change, they would go to The Receiver for a final decision if it was a very important rule. COMMITTEE OF ELDERS The Committee of Elders always makes the Naming list in advance. The Elders also make observations on the Elevens to make final decisions about the Assignments that they should be given. INCREASING LEVELS OF Since Jonas is about to become a Twelve in December, the Elders have been observing OBSERVATION him and the other Elevens more intensely. This aids them in deciding what each person’s Assignment should be. This usually occurred at school during recreation time and volunteer hours. HALL OF OPEN RECORDS The Hall of Open Records is a place that keeps records and information about each person. Those older than a Twelve are able to look up their age in the Hall of Open Records if they wish. ASSIGNMENT Assignment is the term used to describe the careers or pursuits that are given to each person when they become a Twelve. These Assignments are given based on each person’s interests and what the Elders believe they would be best at. The Elders hardly made a mistake and everyone was usually content with the Assignment they receive. Assignments typically provide training for adult life. Based on this passage, I can infer that animals are unrealistic and imaginary in this community. They are not aware that animals are real and they view them, instead, as imaginary creatures. The way animals are mentioned to be imaginary creatures and how they speak about Jonas’s being called a bear makes it clear that animals are not a familiar concept in this community.
