CONTEMPORARY DATA PRACTICES COLLECTING DATA LEARNING OBJECTIVES 1. Understand why data is collected 2. Learn different ways to collect data, such as using: a. Autonomous Devices b. Passive and Active Methods c. Manual Collection d. Usage Data STARTER Write down three different scenarios where data is collected in your daily life. Discuss why and how that data is collected. TYPES OF DATA There are two main types of data: qualitative data and quantitative data. Qualitative data is descriptive. It includes things like color, texture, and taste. Quantitative data is numerical. It includes things like height, rate, and speed. PURPOSE OF DATA COLLECTION Organisations and individuals collect data for many purposes including: Decision Making Analysis and Research Performance Measurement and Evaluation Problem-Solving Planning and Forecasting Compliance and Regulation Customer Insights and personalisation Risk Management Monitoring and Evaluation MANUAL DATA COLLECTION This method of collection allows for the gathering of data through direct human involvement. One-to-One Interview Focus Group Questionaire Observation AUTONOMOUS DEVICES An autonomous device collects data without any direct human intervention. This method of data collection is more cost effective than employing and transporting people to a location to collect data. Allows data to be collected instantly and more frequently, which will improve its accuracy / currency. PASSIVE DATA COLLECTION The collection of data without actively engaging or interacting with the subjects being studied. This is often done through observation or monitoring. ACTIVE DATA COLLECTION This method of data collection involved direct engagement with participants or subjects to collect data. This is often done through surveys, interviews or experiments. Active data collection allows researchers to obtain specific information by actively seeking responses from individuals.
