MODULE SUMMARY Aims and Summary The aims of the module are to further develop core professional and clinical skills in regards to dietetics science, to support students in considering in depth the adaptation of diet for a disease and develop the application of diet therapy, and to critically explore the ethical dilemmas associated with a chronic disease/end-stage disease. Module Size and credits Module size: single CATS points: 20 ECTS credits: 10 Open/Restricted: Restricted Availability on/off On campus campus: Total student study 200 hours: Number of weeks: 30 School responsible: School of Health Academic Year: 2024-2025 Entry Requirements (pre-requisites and co-requisites): None 3 Excluded Combinations Composition of module mark (including weighting of components) KIS Activity Type Percentage WR 50% CW PR 50% Pass requirements Compensation is permitted within the module’s assessment. Students must achieve a mark of 35% in each component to be able to compensate. Module mark should be 40%. Assessed components The assessment comprises the following: An indicative example of the assignment: a) Unseen 2-hour written exam 2000- word equivalent (50% of the final mark) b) OSCE relevant to the Indicative Module Content of Advanced Clinical Nutrition (50% of the final mark) Special Features Taught and assessed in English. 4 2. TEACHING, LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT Intended Module Learning Outcomes By the end of the module, students should be able to: 1) Critically discuss the multi-professional management of a disease including underpinning clinical science, etiology, psychological and sociological issues, diagnosis, treatment and diet therapy 2) Select and critically discuss appropriate methods of nutritional assessment for these conditions 3) Critically discuss enteral and parenteral feeding methods 4) Demonstrate practical skills in the adaptation of foods/use of dietary products to meet the needs of a disease and apply this knowledge to specific case scenarios 5) Critically discuss the ethical dilemmas associated with chronic disease/long term conditions, end stage disease and palliative care Indicative Content The students will build on knowledge from previous modules, particularly Clinical Nutrition, to develop in depth evidence based knowledge of nutritional support including all methods of enteral feeding and parenteral nutrition, liver diseases, pancreatic diseases, biliary diseases, diabetic nephropathy. Critical evaluation of the evidence base will support students in considering in depth dietary intervention and care delivery and the ethical issues associated with nutritional intervention. Teaching and Learning Students will acquire knowledge in this module via a combination of lectures, workshops, tutorials, group work and student led seminars. In addition, there will be an important self-study component. Lectures introducing complexities of clinical nutrition and ethics and the diseases and disorders that clients may suffer with will be supplemented by workshops and tutorials giving students the opportunity to enhance their evidence based understanding and application to practice as a dietitian. Students will be guided in their self-study to online and other resources.
