# Basic Life Support (BLS) Procedures This document outlines basic life support procedures, likely for a medical training course. ## 1. The Chain of Survival (except) The current chain of survival does *not* include: * Early initiation of advanced life support The other elements are: * Early recognition and calling for help * Early initiation of CPR * Early defibrillation ## 2. Next Steps in Dealing with an Unconscious Victim The correct sequence is: * Safety assessment, assessment of consciousness, and breathing, calling for help. ## 3. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Initiation CPR for adult patients begins with: * 30 chest compressions (one person) or 15 chest compressions (two persons); * 2 rescue breaths are then given. ## 4. Chest Compression Placement For chest compressions on an adult, place your hands: * In the middle of the chest. ## 5. Chest Compression Details (except) Chest compressions for an adult should *not* include: * In adults, we *do* perform them using both hands. The remaining details are: * To a depth of 5-6 cm * With a frequency of 100-120/min * The relaxation time for compression should be 2:1 ## 6. Ratio of Compressions to Rescue Breaths The correct ratio is: * 30:2 ## 7. Assessing Patient Condition During BLS Assess patient condition during BLS procedures by: * Every 5 cycles * If the patient starts breathing normally * Before applying AED electrodes
