# Literary Terms #2 **10/30** **Chad M.** 28. **Parallelism** - repetition of words, phrases, or sentences with the same grammatical structure. 29. **Anaphora** - repetition in which first word(s) of a clause are repeated in a series of statements. 30. **Paradox** - a statement that seems contrary to common sense yet may, in fact, be true. 31. **Alliteration** - repetition of same/very similar consonant sounds that are close together in a literary piece. 32. **Personification** - an object, idea, or quality is represented as people. 33. **Diction** - a writer's or speaker's choice of words. 34. **Flashback** - to stop the story and go back to explain an event that happened earlier in the plot. 35. **Dialect** - a way of speaking that is characteristic of a particular region or group of people. 36. **Voice** - unique use of language that allows readers to hear personality in text. 37. **Foil** - a character who is used as a contrast to another character. 38. **Parallel Plots** - separate story lines happening at the same time and linked by common characters/themes. 39. **Point of View** - vantage point from which a story is told: * **1st** - story told by one of the characters to another character using the word "you". * **2nd** - narrator tells the story. * **3rd** - story told by someone outside the story; omniscient narrator shares thoughts/feelings of all characters. * **Limited** - narrator shares thoughts/feelings of one central character.
