Chances are, it was a continental breakfast. This light, basic meal, often featuring pastries, cereals, fruits, and a variety of bread, is a popular and cost-effective way to enhance your customers\' stay. In this microsession, we delve into the origins of the continental breakfast, explore its menu options, and suggest other breakfast ideas for your hospitality business. A continental breakfast is a light morning meal that often includes pastries, baked goods, fruits, toast, and coffee. It is typically served buffet-style and is modelled after a European breakfast, comparable to what one may get in France or the Mediterranean. Continental breakfasts emphasise simplicity and dishes that are easily stored. Why Is It Called a Continental Breakfast? ----------------------------------------- The term\' continental breakfast\' is a direct reference to the continent of Europe and the breakfast habits of European civilizations. It was first coined in 1896, marking the turn of the century. Before the 1800s, the typical American jobs involved farm work, necessitating a high-calorie breakfast to kickstart the day. However, as the 1900s dawned, the nature of work in America shifted to more sedentary roles, and the emerging middle-class workers sought a lighter breakfast option. At the same time, the influx of European visitors to America increased, many of whom stayed in hotels. The hotels, in a show of adaptability, added a light breakfast option to their menu, catering to the preferences of their European clientele. Why Offer a Continental Breakfast? ---------------------------------- If you\'re considering adding a breakfast option to your restaurant or hotel, consider why a continental breakfast would be a good fit. Cost-Effectiveness---Pastries, cereals, and bread are inexpensive to buy, can be ordered in bulk, and have a relatively long shelf life. They do not need to be created or acquired on a regular basis, saving your business time and money. Amenity Popularity - Continental breakfasts are convenient for travellers who may need to eat early in the morning. This makes hotels with complimentary continental breakfasts more appealing to travellers, resulting in increased hotel income and, potentially, higher hotel star ratings. Manageability - Because most continental breakfast options do not require cooking, the breakfast area may be managed with minimum staffing. This also allows breakfast to be provided in almost any location or venue, such as a lobby or conference room.
