Prof. Mohamed Mostafa Elbadr Eye Ophthalmo = Oculo Related to the eye Examples: -Ophthalmology (medical specialty… -Ophthalmologist (specialist in….. -Ophthalmoscopy (examination of eye fundus using……. -Xerophthalmia (dry eye) Ophthalmoscope (device used for examination of the interior of the eye through the pupil) Exophthalmos: bulging of eyeball outside orbit Endophthalmos: displacement of the eyeball back to the orbit Endophthalmitis: inflammation of the intraocular fluids (vitreous and aqueous) panophthalmitis: inflammation of all coats of the eye including the intraocular structure. Oculo = eye Examples -Ocular nerve -Ocular muscles -Extraocular muscles Miosis (Decrease pupil size) Miotic Mydriasis Mydriatic Conjunctive (mucus membrane that cover sclera) -Conjunctivitis -Conjunctival hemorrhage Kerato (cornea) Examples: -keratitis Keratoplasty: reconstruction of the cornea using corneal graft Keratoconjunctivitis: inflammation of the cornea and conjunctiva Iri or irido (iris) -Iritis -Iridectomy Cyclo (ciliary body) -Cyclitis -Iridocyclitis -Cycloplegia -Cyclospasm Blephar: eyelid Examples: Blepharitis: inflammation of the eyelid -Cataract a progressive opacity of the lens of the eye Glaucoma: a disease of the eye characterized by increased intraoccular pressure that results in atrophy of the optic nerves and blindness if not treated. myopia: optical condition in which parallel rays are focused in front of the retina. Objects are seen clearly only when near to the eye Hypermetropia (hyperopia): optical condition in which parallel rays are focused in back of the retina.
