The purpose of discipline is to advise members of inappropriate behavior and encourage members to perform in an acceptable manner and produce quality work. Discipline becomes necessary when conduct falls below an acceptable standard and also when there is a breach of the established rules and regulations of the agency. POLICY: The Escambia County Sheriff's Office uses a uniform approach to discipline that complies with federal and state constitutional provisions, Florida Statutes, Sheriff's Office Rules and Regulations, and applicable contractual and negotiated agreements. Members who have rights established in a collective bargaining agreement may appeal disciplinary action in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement. 2. DEFINITIONS: *COUNSELING* -- Advice or guidance given to achieve a specific action or behavior. Counseling is used to bring to a member's attention the need to improve performance, work habits, behavior or attitude and to serve as a warning against further repetition of the unsatisfactory conduct. The supervisor will utilize the occasion to identify and define the area needing improvement and inform the member as to what improvement is required. *DEMOTION* -- A reduction in grade to a lower rank in the chain-of-command. *DISMISSAL* -- Termination of employment for cause. *REMEDIAL TRAINING* --Training provided to a member when it has been determined that poor work quality or infractions are the result of a lack of knowledge or skill and is intended to raise the member\'s general competence level. *SUSPENSION* - An enforced leave of absence without pay (workdays or hours) for disciplinary purposes.
