NCM 107 – Care of Mother, Child and the Adolescent (well clients) Roles and Responsibilities of Maternal Child Nurse Roles and Responsibilities of Maternal Child Nurse Maternal and Child health nursing can be visualized within a framework in which nurses use: Nursing Process Nursing Theory Qualityand Safety Education for Nurses competencies ❖Care for families during child-bearing and childrearing years and through the four phases of health care. Nursing Process: Assessment (labor and delivery) Vita signs Fundal Height (FH) Measurement FHB/FHR (Leopold’s Maneuvers) Calculation of AOG & EDD/EDC Obstetric (OB) Data = Gravida & Para (GTPAL), Prenatal history Laboratory/diagnostic test results (ex: Ultrasound & blood tests) Labor Monitoring for Uterine Contractions (duration, frequency, interval) Internal Examination (IE) Findings Cervical dilatation (centimeters) Fetal presentation Degree of fetal descent Condition of the membrane/bag of waters = intact, ruptured or leaking Fundal Height Measurement Calculation of AOG & EDD/EDC Calculate the number of days between the current date and the first day of the LMP. Divide the total number of days by 7 to find the AOG in weeks. Use the Naegele’s Rule/ formula in Calculating the EDD/EDC -3 months, +7 days, + 1 year (except for January, February & March) For example, LMP is July 12 – 17, 2023 7 / 12 / 2023 -3 +7 + 1 4 / 19 / 2024 EDD = April 19, 2024 Degree of fetal descent Four Phases of Health Care Healthpromotion – educating parents and children to follow sound health practices through teaching and role modelling. Healthmaintenance – intervening to maintain health when risk of illness is present Health restoration – using conscientious assessment to be certain that symptoms of illness are identified, and interventions are begun to return patient to wellness most rapidly Health rehabilitation – Helping prevent complication from illness; helping a patient with residual effects achieve an optimal state of wellness and independence; helping a patient to accept an inevitable death Roles and Responsibilities of Maternal Child Nurse A maternal-child nurse is often cross trained.
