Supone una absoluta novedad en la narrativa española por dos motivos: El protagonista evoluciona según las experiencias que le suceden. El pueblo aparece como protagonista de una novela. El lenguaje de la novela responde a la intención de su autor: criticar a la sociedad de su época a través del humor y la ironía.
