Great Vessels 22 Great vessels Pulmonary trunk Begin: Behind Left sternal margin opposite Left 3rd costal cartilage Course: o It is completely covered with pericardium o It passes in middle mediastinum End Opposite Left 2nd costal cartilage, it bifurcates Branches: right long Pulmonary artery & Left short Pulmonary artery Ascending aorta Begin: Behind Left sternal margin opposite Left 3rd inter-costal space Course: o It is completely covered with pericardium o It passes in middle mediastinum End Opposite right 2nd costal cartilage, it forms the arch of aorta Branches: right & left coronary arteries DR.Hendawy “Great vessels” 23 Arch of aorta nd Begin: at right 2 costal cartilage a continuation of ascending aorta Course: It passes in superior mediastinum End: at left 2nd costal cartilage to continue as descending thoracic aorta Branches: A. Brachiocephalic which gives right common carotid & right subclavian B. Left common carotid artery C. Left subclavian artery D. Thyroida ima artery “may be absent” Descending aorta nd Begin: at left 2 costal cartilage as continuation of aortic arch Course: It passes in posterior mediastinum End: Pass through aortic orifice at T12 to become abdominal aorta Branches: 1. (2) Left bronchial 2. Pericardial 3. Esophageal 4. Superior phrenic 5. Subcotal 6.
