Pulse Points Pulse Points SUMMARY Cardiovascular system is composed of 3 main organs: heart, blood, and blood vessels. Cardiovascular system functions: transports oxygen and nutrients, remove waste products, regulates body temperature, transport hormone, support immune system, and regulates blood pressure. The heart is composed of right & left atrium, right & left ventricle, septum, valves, and pericardium. Cardiac cycle is the period of time that begins with contraction of the atria and ends with ventricular relaxation. There are only two audible heart sounds: S1 "lub" and S2 "dub". The three types of blood vessels: arteries, capillaries, and veins. SUMMARY Four main components of blood: red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma. Blood's functions: supplies oxygen and nutrients, removes waste, protects against diseases and infections, regulates temperature, and the platelets: clots blood to stop bleeding and prevent infection. Three formed elements of blood: erythrocyctes (rbc), leukocytes (wbc), and thrombocyctes (platelets). Blood groups are classified based on the presence or absence of specific antigens and antibodies in the blood. The two primary systems are the ABO (four main blood groups: A, B, AB, O) and Rh systems (Rh+ & Rh-). Pulse is the rhythmic beating felt in arteries due to blood expansion and contraction as the heart pumps blood. Pulse points: Radial pulse (wrist), Brachial pulse (medial border of the humerus), Carotid pulse (neck), Femoral pulse (at the groin), Popliteal pulse (behind the knee), Posterior tibial pulse and Dorsalis pedis pulse (foot).
