Arellano University - Plaridel Campus Senior High School Department EARTH AND LIFE SCIENCE 1 Semester - 2 st nd Quarter Introduction to Life Science PART 1: The historical development of the concept of life. PART 2: Characteristics of Living organism What is Life in Science? ❑ It is the period from birth to death or as the condition that occurs only in living organisms. ❑ It is any system capable of performing functions such as eating, metabolizing, breathing, moving, growing, The simplest way to define reproducing etc. life sciences is the study of living organisms and life processes. THEORIES ON THE ORIGIN OF LIFE 1. SPECIAL CREATION / DIVINE CREATION 2. SPONTANEOUS GENERATION THEORY 3. THEORY OF 4. PANSPERMIA BIOGENESI THEORY OF SPECIAL CREATION / DIVINE CREATION The concept of divine creation is that all life forms existing today have been created by a supreme being. THEORY OF PANSPERMIA The Greek word “panspermia” means “seeds everywhere." The idea is that “seeds of life” were scattered in the Universe and that life was seeded on Earth from outer space. THEORY OF PANSPERMIA SPONTANEOUS GENERATION THEORY/ ABIOGENESIS The Greek philosophers, biologist and scientist such Aristotle, Thales, Anaximander, Newton and Needham are one of the firm believers of this theory. States that living creature could arise from non-living matter. SPONTANEOUS GENERATION THEORY/ ABIOGENESIS States that living creature could arise from non-living matter. An Italian Francesco Redi conducted an experiment that challenged the idea of spontaneous generations. Redi was able to prove that organisms do not just come to life spontaneously.
