2D Summary review In addition to what is provided here, you should check out: 1. **Check your old unit tests. They are very helpful for review** 2. Check old reviews for unit tests if you want some really detailed review Check D2L for old practice sheets / summary notes! If you want practice pages for any of these skills (especially chemical formulas), and can’t get them yourself, please let me know! Scientific skills Difference between independent and dependent variables Identifying independent and dependent variables from examples Very basic lab safety Designing fair experiments. (You can probably expect a “What’s wrong with this experiment” question, like from our first test. Chemistry Chemical and physical changes: What’s the difference? Can you provide examples? Reading information from the periodic table ○ Name, mass, symbol, atomic number, # of protons, # of neutrons, valence electrons, etc. Reactivity trends on the periodic table Define reactants, products, elements, and compounds Counting atoms ○ E.g. how many oxygen atoms are in NaPO4? 2NaPO4? Be(PO4)2 Compare and contrast ionic and covalent bonds ○ What elements form them? What do electrons do in these bonds? How/why is the compound held together? Conservation of mass: ○ Use conservation of mass to explain why a reaction is/isn’t possible ○ Balance chemical equations Write chemical equations from word equations ○ Can you turn names into formulas and formulas into names for the following? Binary Ionic compounds Ionic compounds with polyatomics Compounds with multivalent metals Covalent compounds Binary acids and oxyacids Reading the pH scale (which is most acidic/basic?) Bio You will NOT need to identify anatomy You WILL need to be able to describe the job each piece of anatomy does ○ E.g. esophagus carries food and liquid to the stomach ○ Trachea carries air towards the lungs (bronchi) ○ Diaphragm is a muscle that can contract to increase the volume of chest cavity ○ Etc. etc. Describe the function of the major organ systems ○ What does each system do ○ Describe how they can work together to create a functioning human E.g. respiratory pulls in the O2 we need and removes the waste CO2. Circulatory system actually pumps the gases around to cells and lungs Describe types of tissue in humans, e.g. epithelial tissue Compare arteries, veins, and capillaries Briefly describe each stage of mitosis Describe the function of the major cell organelles we learned about in this course Optics Understand the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation ○ Label colours from the longest wavelength to the shortest ○ What exists in this spectrum just below red? ○ What exists in this spectrum just above purple? Using proper anatomical terms, describe how we see ○ What does light do when it hits a surface? ○ How does it enter the eye ○ What actually detects the light Describe each piece of anatomy in the eye. Try to summarize how the eye works as a whole organ Describe transmission, absorption, and reflection of light Predict where light rays will reflect when they hit a mirror (ray diagrams) Predict where light rays will refract to when they pass through a lens (ray diagrams) Climate Using words and a diagram(s), clearly describe the greenhouse effect on Earth Why is the greenhouse effect becoming more and more pronounced (stronger and stronger) Compare and contrast positive and negative feedback loops. Also, provide an example of each
