The average total number of children that would be born to a woman in her lifetime. // The global average fertility rate has halved from around 5 in the 1960s to around 2.4 in 2021 What is the Literacy rate? The percentage of people in a given population who have the ability to read and write. // Nationwide, on average, 79% of U.S. adults are literate in 2022. 21% of adults in the US are illiterate in 2022. HICs(developed) / LICs (developing) HICs: High-Income Countries LICs: Low-Income Countries Relationship between fertility and Literacy Higher Fertility Rates in LICs 1. In agricultural or less urbanised areas, larger families can be an economic asset, as children contribute to household and economic activities. 2. Limited access to reproductive health services and contraceptives leads to higher birth rates. Lower Fertility Rates in HICs 1. Wealthier countries generally have higher levels of education, particularly among women (women empowerment). Educated women tend to delay childbirth in favor of career and personal development. 2. The economic cause of having children increases. More opportunities for women often results in delayed childbirth and fewer children. 3. HICs usually have better access to family planning services, allowing individuals to have more control over their reproductive choices. 4.
