UNIT 2.6 WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD? (A) Predicting the world ‘s population growth o Experts think that the population will keep rising until 2100 o Rate of growth will slow down o It is hard to predict so far ahead. Experts can only estimate. (B)Why might the population fall? o There are two main factors: life expectancy and fertility rate o Copy table B (page 30) o Fertility rate in the year 1950 was 4.7 children per women and today its around 2.4. o The rate is different in different countries (C) A closer look at that rate of 2.1 o A fertility rate of 2.1 children is called the replacement fertility rate o What is replacement fertility rate? level of fertility at which a population replaces itself from one generation to the next. o 2.1 children replace the two parents when the parents die (D) Problems Ahead o In most countries the population is still rising (UK) o But, in some its already falling (Ex: Japan) o Rising and falling population can lead to problems Complete Your Turn (Page 31 Ques 6) (a)Japan – 20 years (b)(i) 4.2 children (ii) 1.4 children (c)Japan is more developed. It has a life expectancy which is 20 years higher than Ethiopia. That indicates people who live there have access to clean water, proper sewage system, better quality of food, good medical care. Japan’s fertility rate is 3 times lower than Ethiopia indicating that more women probably work and have better access to family planning.
