LITERATURE OF THE PHILIPPINES DURING THE SPANISH COLONIZATION LESSON 2 (1565 – 1863) It has two distinct classifications: (religious and secular). It introduced Spanish as the medium of communication. It became centered on the Christian faith and the stories about natural phenomena suddenly became all about the loves of saints and other religious hymns. Slowly, Philippine literature started to emulate the traditional Spanish ways of themes and forms of writings, including the repetitive plots and obvious shadowy characters. Despite this changes, Filipinos still found a way to make Spanish literature their own. 1. The first Filipino alphabet called Alibata was replaced by Roman alphabet. 2.The teaching of Christian Doctrine became the basis of religious practices. Juan de placencia 1593 3. The Spanish language which became the literary language during this time lent many of its word to our language. 4. European legends and traditions brought here became assimilated in our songs, corridos, and moro-moros. Ancient literature was collected and translated to Tagalog and other dialects. 6. Many grammar books were printed in Filipino, like Tagalog, Ilocano and Visayan. 7. Our periodicals during this time gained religious tone. FIRST BOOKS Doctrina Cristiana The title literally means “The Teachings of Christianity”, and thus the primary goal of the book was to propagate Christian teaching across the Philippine archipelago. Nuestra Señora Del Rosario A book which contains the story of different saints, novena and various questions about Christianity. Ang Barlaan at Josaphat This is a biblical story printed in the Philippines and translated to Tagalog from Greek by Fr. Antonio De Borja. It is believed to be the first Tagalog novel published in the Philippines even if it is only a translation. The printed translation has only 556 pages. The Ilocano translation in poetry was done by Fr. Agustin Mejia. PASYON This is the book about the life and sufferings of Jesus Christ.It is read only during lent. There were 4 versions of this in Tagalog and each version is according to the name of the writer. These are the Pilapil version (by Mariano Pilapil of Bulacan, 1814), the De Belen version (by Gaspar Aquino De Belen of bat. In 1704), the De La Merced (by Aniceto De La Merced of Norzagaray, Bulacan in 1856) and the De Guia version (by Luis De Guia in 1750). URBANA AT FELISA book by Modesto De Castro, the so called father of classic prose in Tagalog. These are letters between two sisters Urbana at Felisa and have influenced greatly the behavior of people in society because the letters dealt with good behavior. RECREATIONAL PLAY CENAKULO A dramatic performance of the passion and death of Christ. Cenakulo is a nationwide event that helps locals to remember biblical events pertinent to the life, tribulations and ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ. It was named after the upper room (cenacle), which is thought to be the place where the last supper was held. Cenakulo is very important for the culture of the Filipino people, but it’s not an event exclusive to their tradition. In fact, Cenakulo is simply the Filipino version of this catholic tradition, which is known as passion play around the world. ZARZUELA The Zarzuela Musical Theatre has been widely adapted by Filipinos in their native cultures, notably in urban areas. The theatre was only introduced by the Spanish in 1878, despite having colonial rule since the middle of the 16th century. During this time, the plays were performed only by Spanish people. By 1880, majority of the performers and writers were Filipinos, notably Philippine national hero, José Rizal, who was fond of the play. LAGAYLAY A special occasion for the Pilareños of Sorsogon during maytime to get together. Women dance on the streets while chanting prayers to find the real cross. TIBAG Dramatic performance for the purpose of manifesting devotion for the holy cross usually in Bulacan and Rizal. PANUNULUYAN Philippine Christmas dramatic ritual narrating the whole family’s search for a place to stay in Bethlehem for Jesus Christ‘s birth through songs. SALUBONG Dramatizes the reunion of the risen Christ and his mother. CARILLO, form of dramatic entertainment perform on a moonless night during a town fiesta or on dark nights after a harvest. SAYNETE A short musical comedy popular during the 18th century. They were exaggerated comedy shown between acts plays and were mostly performed by characters from the lower class. MORO-MORO Like the Cenaculo, the Moro-Moro is presented also on a special stage. This is performed during town fiestas to entertain the people and to remind them of their Christian religion. Example: “Prinsipe Rodante”. KARAGATAN This is a poetic vehicle of a socio- religious nature celebrated during the death of a person. DUPLO The Duplo replaced the Karagatan. This is a poetic joust in speaking and reasoning. BALAGTASAN This is a poetic joust or a contest of skills in debate on a particular topic or issue. Held to honor Francisco Balagtas. DUNG-AW This is a chant in free verse by a bereaved person or his representative beside the corpse of the dead. AWIT -in dodecasyllabic verse. -fabricated stories from writers’ imagination although the setting and characters are European. Ex: Florante at Laura by Francisco Balagtas CORRIDO - in octosyllabic verse. - usually on legends or stories - refers to narration. Ex:Ibong Adarna by Jose de la Cruz
