Summary
This document is a learning module on cancer, covering learning objectives and relating them with text from a religious perspective. It includes definitions of biological terms, and the processes of cancer initiation, progression, metastasis and how deregulation contributes to the development of cancer. The document also includes an excerpt from a biblical text about sin and redemption.

Burman University, BIOL 374 Cellular Biology, Cancer Cancer Learning Objectives: After completing this module, you will be able to 1. Define the following terms: aneuploid, oncometabolite, benign, malignant, metastasis, indirect- versus direct-acting carcinogens, “multi-hit” model, oncogenes, protooncogenes, tumor-suppressors, and genome maintenance genes. 2. Describe the biologic hallmarks of a cancer cell. 3. Understand how genetics and gene mutations contribute to predisposition and progression of cancer. 4. Classify malignant tumors as carcinomas or sarcomas. 5. Describe the processes involved in cancer initiation, progression, and metastasis. 6. Identify the three broad categories of genes that are mutated in oncogenesis. 7. Identify the common cellular and molecular mechanisms that are deregulated in cancerous cells, and how their deregulation contributes to the development of cancer. Text: Lodish et al. (2021), Ch. 25 Verse: If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell. Matt 5:29-30 (NIV) To stop cancer from spreading to the rest of the body, it’s sometimes necessary to surgically remove the cancerous parts to save the rest of our body. This medical concept is not new. From this perspective, what Jesus is saying makes perfect sense. If totally removing sin from our life is simply cutting off a hand, who wouldn’t do that? Sin is not confined to one part of our body – our entire body is infected with sin. The only way to save us is to kill this sinful body completely. This is exactly what Christ did for us when he died a physical death for our sins. We are born again in a spiritual birth when we accept Him as our savior and allow Him to live in us (I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me…..Gal 2:20). LW2024
