The first one is “Experimentation”. List the remaining 3 that follow experimentation. (3) Experimentation: Trying out the substance for the first time. Regular use: When the substance is used more often (e.g., going to a party every weekend and drinking or drinking alone at home). Problem or risky use: Problems begin to arise as a result of using the substance and dangerous habits are formed (e.g., emotional, social and/or physical health problems may begin to arise. People may drink and drive or get bad school grades as a result). Dependence: Despite the obvious harm, the substance use is causing the person to become addicted to the substance and they are unable to just stop using it. 1.2 Identify 2 reasons why teenagers vape. (2) Their friends are vaping. All the flavour variations are marketed at teens. The belief that vaping is less harmful than cigarettes. 1.3 You are concerned that you are finding gaming to be addictive. Identify 3 symptoms that could indicate that your time spent gaming is excessive. (3) Obsession with internet games. Withdrawal symptoms when you are not able to play them. Page 2 of 7 Grade 8 Life Orientation November Examination 2023 1.4 In your opinion, why is marijuana one of the most abused drugs by teens in South Africa, in other words, why is it such a popular choice? List 2 reasons and argue against each one. (4) Marks allocated for logical point and counterargument. For example: As one of the most abused drugs in the world, many people think that marijuana is not that harmful as it is a plant and therefore it is ‘natural’ and safe. However, this is not true as marijuana contains THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) that can lead to mind- altering effects. (2) In 2018 the South African Constitutional Court passed legislation that adults may use marijuana for private and personal use. However, selling or dealing in marijuana is still illegal under the age of 18. (2) 1.5 Two of your friends have had a serious argument. Provide them with 2 tips for restoration after conflict. (2) Do not be defensive. Avoid criticising the other person. Stay focused on the conflict at hand and do not attack a person’s character. Take responsibility for your part in the conflict. Do not let an argument linger before making amends, it just becomes more hurtful. Learn to apologise. Learn to forgive. 1.6 When we feel under threat, we tend to have four automatic reactions. Name and briefly explain each one. (4) Fight (to argue or get aggressive) Flight (denying the conflict exists or running away from it) Freeze (to disengage from the conflict) Fawn (acting in a way that pleases the other person in order to avoid any conflict) 1.7 Analyse why anger is seen as an emotion that is like the tip of an iceberg. Provide an example of a time when you have felt angry. What emotions were under the surface? (2) Typically, when we feel or express anger, this is the emotion that others see (like the tip of an iceberg), but there is actually a much larger structure of underlying emotions. I felt angry when I was left off a WhatsApp group. Underneath the anger, there was hurt and disappointment. Page 3 of 7 Grade 8 Life Orientation November Examination 2023 Question 2: Section C: Source-Based Questions Read the source below and answer the questions which follow: You’re not addicted to sugar, you’re addicted to an emotional state. By Malibongwe Tyilo, Daily Maverick, 09 April 2022 Is sugar addiction a thing? 1. There is now solid evidence in nonhuman animals showing that sugar and sweet reward can even be more rewarding and attractive than addictive drugs. 2. The authors of a new study conclude that “there is strong evidence of the existence of sugar addiction.” Their model demonstrates that five out of 11 criteria for SUD [substance use disorder] are met, specifically: use of larger amounts and for longer than intended, craving, hazardous use, tolerance, and withdrawal. 3. Continuous excessive consumption of sugar can be disastrous for human health for various reasons, one of the most important being that it might lead to obesity, which can open up a host of health complications. 4. “Sugar works with the reward centre in the brain, giving a temporary feeling of calm, relaxation and contentment; but it’s short-term,” says Mariam Forgan, a registered dietitian. She further describes sugar addiction as a secondary addiction to a primary emotional addiction: “Say, for example, you’re feeling anxious, and you don’t want to feel anxious. You might look for a distraction, and often it’s something crunchy, something that tastes good, the crunch sort of relieves a bit of the anxiety in the jaw. But it’s also just an escape from that moment in time, it’s a temporary sort of relief, like a drug.” 5. “You have to ask yourself, what emotion am I addicted to? Am I addicted to self-pity? Am I addicted to always feeling guilty? Do I create situations in my life so that I feel guilty so that I can reward myself with food? Everything can change once a person is aware of themselves, both their strengths and their shortcomings, then they can work with that,” says Forgan. 6. She also suggests avoiding situations where one is rushing around all day, skipping meals and surviving on caffeine: “Being in a constant state of rushing means that you’re distracted from how you’re truly feeling.” Adapted from: Tyilo, M. Page 4 of 7 Grade 8 Life Orientation November Examination 2023 Question 2 2.1 Use your own words to explain how research has shown that sugar addiction can be classified as an addiction (paragraph 2). (3) Many of the same behaviour patterns and effects are seen in people who are addicted to other substances and people who are addicted to sugar. There is an increased amount of sugar or other substance used over time, and with this comes tolerance and increased time spent on the habit, as well as cravings, a lack of concern for damaging or dangerous effects of the sugar or substance, and physical and emotional difficulties when it is removed or unavailable. 2.2 What is the main physical harm in consuming too much sugar (paragraph 3)? (1) Obesity 2.3 Explain the relationship between sugar and the reward centre of the brain (paragraph 4). (2) Sugar stimulates feelings of relaxation, happiness and calm but these do not last for long. 2.4 Why does Forgan describe sugar as an ‘escape’ (paragraph 4)? (2) It allows the person consuming sugar to temporarily put aside anxiety or other uncomfortable emotions. 2.5 If your friend said that they were finding it difficult to reduce how much sugar they consumed, what advice would you give them? Make at least three suggestions. Refer to paragraphs 5 and 6 as well as your own ideas. (2) Mark globally. A minimum of three ideas – some can be based on those in the text but at least one must be original.
