Pharynx Arterial supply Ascending pharyngeal: from external carotid artery Superior laryngeal: from superior thyroid artery wy Dorsal lingual: from lingual artery Ascending palatine & Tonsillar: from facial artery Greater palatine & pharyngeal: from maxillary artery da Muscles Longitudinal group: o Stylo-pharyngeus en o Salpingo-pharyngeus o Palato-pharyngeus Constrictors: Medial pterygoid plate H o Superior Constrictor: arises from Pterygomandibular ligament R. Mylohyoid line o Middle Constrictor arises from stylohyoid Ligament & Hyoid bone o Inferior Constrictor: arises from thyroid & cricoid cartilages D All constrictors are inserted into Pharyngeal raphe Action: Pharyngeal constriction help in swallowing Anatomist “Pharynx” Nerve supply of pharynx Motor: All muscles are supplied by pharyngeal plexus "vagus/ vago-accessory complex" except stylopharyngeus by Glossopharyngeal nerve Sensory: o Nasopharynx: from maxillary nerve. wy o Oropharynx: from glossopharyngeal nerve. o Laryngopharynx: from vagus nerve. Autonomic: o Sympathetic: from the superior cervical sympathetic ganglion. da o Parasympathetic: from the facial nerve. Parts of pharynx Naso-pharynx: en o Behind nasal cavity o Lies at level of atla “C1” o Bounded laterally by superior constrictor Oro-pharynx: o Behind oral cavity o Lies at level of C2 & C3 H R. o Bounded laterally by superior & middle constrictors Laryngo-pharynx: o Behind laryngeal cavity D o Lies at level of C4&5&6 o Bounded laterally by middle & inferior constrictors Anatomist “Pharynx” Features of naso-pharynx o Auditory tube orifice: At level of inferior concha o Tubal elevation o Salpingo – pharyngeal Fold wy o Pharyngeal recess o Pharyngeal tonsil "adenoid" Features of oro-pharynx da Palatine tonsil o Site: at tonsillar fossa between Palateglossus “anteriorly” en Palatopharyngus “posteriorly” Superior constrictor “laterally” H o Main arterial supply: facial artery o Nerve supply: glossopharyngeal nerve R. o Lymph drainage: upper deep cervical lymph nodes Waldyer ring: formed of pharyngeal tonsils, tubal tonsils, palatine tonsil & lingual tonsil D Anatomist “Pharynx”
