Learn the methods in inputting data Input methods and commands -------------------------- - Zebra-striped bar codes on supermarket items provide input that permits instant retrieval of outputs - price and item name - right at the checkout counter. - A bank teller queries the computer through the small terminal at the window by giving a customer\'s account number as input. The same screen immediately provides the customer\'s account balance as output. - A forklift operator speaks directly to a computer through a microphone. Words like left, right, and lift are the actual input data. The output is the computer\'s instant response, which causes the forklift to operate as requested. - A medical student studies the human body on a computer screen, inputting changes to the program to show a close-up of the leg and then to remove layers of tissue to reveal the muscles and bone underneath. The screen outputs the changes, allowing the student (without donning a mask, sanitary gloves, or operating gown) to simulate surgery on the computer. - A sales representative uses an instrument that looks like a pen to enter an order on a special pad. The handwritten characters are displayed as \"typed\" text and are stored in the pad, which is actually a small computer. - Factory workers input data by punching in on a time clock as they go from task to task. The time clock is connected to a computer. The outputs are their weekly paychecks and reports for management that summarize hours per project on a quarterly basis. - A college student writes checks. The data on the checks is used as input to the bank computer, which eventually processes the data to prepare a bank statement once a month. - Charge-card transactions in a retail store provide input data that is processed monthly to produce customer bills. - Water-sample data is collected at lake and river sites, keyed in at the environmental agency office, and used to produce reports that show patterns of water quality. Look only at the screen. - The basic position can be easily found without looking at the keyboard - At first typing tutorials, practiced letters won\'t spell out words. As you get to know the keys, \"real\" words and sentences will be used. That is the only way to learn typing correctly. - Remember to type test your speed periodically. With our typing test you can check for both speed and accuracy progress. The number of words per minute indicates your typing level. If you are still unsatisfied with the results - go back to the typing tutors and keep practicing! Using Microsoft Word -------------------- ### Start Typing 1. The Ribbon at the top of the page. 2. The insertion point. ![](media/image39.png) 1. Extra paragraph mark: ENTER was pressed twice. 2. Extra tab mark: TAB was pressed twice, making the second paragraph indented more than the first. 3. Extra space between words: the SPACEBAR was pressed twice instead of once. - **Red underline** This indicates either a possible spelling error or that Word doesn\'t recognize a word, such as a proper name or place. If you type a word that is correctly spelled, but Word doesn\'t recognize it, you can add it to Word\'s dictionary so that it is not underlined in the future. You\'ll see how in the practice. - **Green underline** Word thinks that grammar should be revised. - **Blue underline** A word is spelled correctly but does not seem to be the correct word for the sentence. For example, you type \"too,\" but the word should be \"to.\" ### Click the Margins button on the Page Layout tab to change margins. ### Saving Work ![](media/image45.png) 1. You can find out what information is available by checking the authority's publication scheme or guide to information. Do this by looking at its website or by contacting the authority. - Is the information you want your own personal data? - If your request is for information about yourself, such as your medical records, you should make a subject access request under the Data Protection Act. - Is the authority likely to have the information? - It may save you time if you check with the authority whether it is likely to have the information you want. For example, you may not be sure whether the information you want is held by your district council or the county council. Public authorities must give reasonable advice and assistance to anyone asking for information, so you should feel free to ask for help in making your request. - Is the information you want suitable for general publication? - The aim of the Freedom of Information Act is to make information available to the general public. You can only obtain information that would be given to anybody who asked for it, or would be suitable for the general public to see. - Some information, such as records about a dead relative, or documents you need for legal purposes, may not always be available under the Act. However, you may have a right to see the information What are the legal requirements for a request of information? ------------------------------------------------------------- - contact the relevant authority directly; - make the request in writing, for example in a letter or an email. You can make a verbal or written request for environmental information; Self-Check CM2.3-1 ================== Enumeration ----------- Answer key CM2.3-1 ================== Enumeration ----------- 1. Reading Articles on a Daily News Paper 2. From communicating to others 3. Internet access INFORMATION SHEET CM2.3-2 ========================= Learning Objectives: -------------------- 1. Navigate the Desktop 2. Navigate the Computer The desktop ----------- - **My Computer:** Opening this icon allows us to browse around our computer and look at the contents of our hard drive, floppy disk, CD- ROM, printers and system settings. - **My Documents:** This opens a folder on our hard drive where we can store our word processing files, images and other document files. - **Recycle Bin:** This is where we put files we want to get rid of. The files stay in here until we empty the recycle bin. In other words, once we throw them out, we still can dig through the trash and get them back until the garbage man arrives. - **My Network Places:** (Called Network Neighborhood in older versions) This icon is important if you use your computer to connect to the Internet or other computers in your home or office. If you\'re not connecting to other users, you really don\'t have to worry about this - but it does have to stay here. - **Internet Explorer:** This is Microsoft\'s Web browser software that comes with Windows, and we\'ll talk about it in \"Chapter 22: Browsing the Web.\" You might also see an icon for Outlook or Outlook Express, which are Microsoft\'s e-mail programs. - **Macintosh HD:** This is your hard drive, where you can store your files and install your programs. - **Trash:** Like the Windows recycle bin, the Mac trash is where you put files you no longer want. They\'ll remain in there until you empty the trash and put it out to the curb. Mastering the mouse ------------------- - **Arrow:** The computer is ready for your clicks and double clicks. - **Hourglass:** The computer is busy. Please wait until the arrow returns. Up-and-down arrow: A window is ready for you to horizontally resize it. **Left-and-right arrow:** A window is ready for you to vertically resize it. Diagonal two-sided arrow: A window is ready for you to resize it both horizontally and vertically. - **Four-sided arrow:** A window is ready for you to move it somewhere. - **Arrow with hourglass:** Your computer is working on something, but you can still work in the meantime. - **Arrow with question mark:** Clicking here will offer some help (we hope!). Vertical line: You\'re working with text and can click to set the insert point here. - **Hand with finger pointing:** You\'re pointing to a link that will take you someplace. ### The Windows Taskbar - **Start button:** Clicking on this button pops up a menu, which allows you to start other programs using your mouse. You can also reach the Start menu by hitting the key with the Microsoft Windows logo on your keyboard. (Windows users with older keyboards can hold down the CTRL key and hit ESC. - **Quick launch bar:** You\'ll usually find this area just to the right of the Start button on computers running Windows versions beginning with 98 (as well as Windows 95 versions with Internet Explorer 5 installed). The collection of small icons is designed to let us start commonly used programs with a single click. - **Active program area:** This is where Windows tell us what programs we\'re currently using. Each one gets its own button, and we can use this area to easily switch between applications. - **System tray:** This is the area to the far right of the taskbar with a digital clock and a volume control icon (provided your computer has a sound card). You might also find other icons for programs that need to stay running all the time, such as your video settings or virus scanner. Software companies love to clutter up our System Tray with their icons. ### The MAC Menu - **Apple:** This drop-down menu features a wealth of settings and commands that we\'ll discuss in later chapters. - **Menu items:** The menu area, just to the right of the Apple, will always feature the commands File, Edit, View, Special and Help. When you\'re running another program, you\'ll see additional command specific to the program. - **Clock:** Tells you the time of day. - **Application menu:** The pull-down menu just to the right of the clock tells you all the programs you\'re currently running. Other desktop characteristics ----------------------------- Launching programs ------------------ The Windows XP Start Menu ------------------------- Window dressing --------------- - **Title bar:** This is the strip at the top of the window with a small icon and a name. Vertical scroll area: This is the area on the right side of the window with an up arrow, a down arrow and an \"elevator\" in between. - **Horizontal scroll area:** This is the area on the bottom of the window with a left arrow, a right arrow and an \"elevator\" in between. - **Close:** The box in the upper right corner is used to close the window. Zoom: The first of the two boxes in the upper left (which looks like a square within a square) is the zoom box. Clicking it increases the size of the window so you can see all of its icons. - **Collapse:** The second box (with a line in a square) rolls the window up like a window shade so you only see the title bar. If you click it again, it will bring it back to the size it was before. ### Navigating with the controls.
