Muscular Tissue Human Body-I Cardiac & smooth muscles Learning objectives: By the end of this lecture, you will be able to: 1. Know the structure of the cardiac muscle fiber. 2.Define intercalated disc & its role. 3.Describe the conducting system of the heart & its microstructure. 4.Describe the TS & LS structure of smooth muscle. Cardiac Muscle Tissue 8. Intercalated discs are present Tubular system of cardiac muscle Sarcoplasmic reticulum: less developed than in skeletal muscle. T. tubules: less well organized and usually associated with one small terminal cisternae of SR forming Diad rather than Triad of skeletal muscle. Intercalated disc (ID) They are the site of junction between the sarcolemma of 2 adjacent cardiac muscle cells They appear as clear deeply stained lines that run transversely, at intervals along the length of the cardiac muscle fiber. Each ID contains different types of cell junctions e.g gap junction, occluding junction, desmosome. Corkscrew-shaped nucleus during contracted state.
