Geography in Everyday Life Cluster Topic 1: Thinking Geographically 1.2 A sense of place in neighbourhoods Learning Outcomes: You will learn … concept of sense of place how people acquire a sense of place in their neighbourhoods how sense of place is represented using different forms and types of media to express people’s sense of place how individuals’ sense of place could be enhanced or contradicted by these different representations Sense of place A space or location with meaning Emotions someone attaches to an area based on their experiences Place can be applied at any scale and does not necessarily have to be fixed in either time or space Additionally, due to globalization, place can change over time as its physical setting and cultures are influenced by new ideas or technologies Mental Maps Mental maps are a mix of objective knowledge and subjective perceptions: precise knowledge about the location of geographic features as well as impressions of places, rough estimates of size and location, and a general sense of the connections between places. Create your own map of the school Students to create their own mental map of the school and surrounding neighbourhood Please label places on your map clearly How do people acquire a sense of place in their neighbourhood? 1. Repeated encounters with objects and people We may acquire and strengthen our sense of place due to our repeated encounters with objects and people along familiar paths during our daily travels. This helps us to recall the features of places that we come across and associate meanings and memories with them. When we travel from our neighbourhoods to other locations, we may travel by motor vehicles through expressways. The speed at which we are travelling may be faster, hence we may only notice larger objects like trees, buildings and structures. Unique features The Toa Payoh Dragon Playground at Lorong 6 Toa Payoh is one of two full-sized Dragon Playgrounds remaining in Singapore How do people acquire a sense of place in their neighbourhood? 2. Significant or memorable events at local landmarks and gathering places We may also acquire our sense of place from significant or memorable events that took place at local landmarks and gathering places. Landmarks are buildings or structures with distinguishing characteristics that are easily recognised. Landmarks are highly visible, easy for most of us to remember and associate with experiences that develop our sense of place. They may serve symbolic or historical purpose. Historical/ Symbolic landmarks The conserved Bukit Timah Railway Station building was built in 1932 and is one of two extant railway stations in Singapore. Along with its key architectural and railway elements, the railway station has been sensitively and carefully restored and repurposed as a heritage gallery for visitors to learn about its history and that of the Rail Corridor. How do people acquire a sense of place in their neighbourhood? Aside from landmarks, our interactions with people at everyday places such as shops may result in us developing an attachment to these places, enabling us to feel a sense of belonging to our neighbourhoods. Places which may not be visually distinctive such as open lawns and plazas may be transformed into memorable places where people gather during community events. Example: Jurong Lake Gardens was transformed into a music arena when it hosted the NParks Concert Series in the Park: Rockestra®, thus becoming a memorable place for many residents. Bite-size fieldwork task! Over a span of a week, capture your journey from home to school/ school to home either in a journal/ speed-up video/ sketch/ sound journal Include description/ narration of people and object encounters. How is the sense of place represented? Sense of place may be represented through different forms and types of media. Range from entertainment to news media, including traditional media such as television, and new media such as social media. This reflects people’s ideas, memories and significance of the location. An individual may express their personal sense of place in different forms such as texts, audio, graphics, still and moving images. This can then be shared with others through various media types such as print media, broadcast media and internet-based media. Collective sense of place Why is the Singapore’s National Day video for 2021 considered as collective sense of place? How may representations of sense of place enhance or contradict an individual’s sense of place? The different emotions expressed by others through media might either enhance or contradict our sense of place. Our sense of place shapes our identity, hence, we respond well to representations that agree with how we feel about places in our neighbourhood. Such representations add new layers of meanings to these places by revealing interesting information about them, thus enhancing our sense of place.
