WHAT IS GEOGRAPHY? YOUR PASSPORT TO THE WORLD. Think: What is Geography? Geography is the study of the Earth’s landscapes, peoples, places, and environments. It is, quite simply, about the study of the world in which we live. Why is geography an important subject? Geography is an important subject because; It helps us understand our world and makes it a more interesting place in which to live. It helps us make sense of news events and what is going on around us. It makes travel and meeting people more exciting. It can introduce you to a variety of hobbies and job opportunities. Geography is a big subject, it can be split into three areas: Physical geography – is the study of landscapes and environments or what our planet is like Human geography -is the study of societies, cultures and economies. Environmental geography – is the study of how humans impact the Earth. 1)Physical geography It is the field of geography that deals with the natural environment, at or near the earth’s surface. E.g Landform features and processes; rock types and natural resources; soils; rivers, lakes and oceans; weather and climate; natural vegetation(flora) and animals (fauna). Landforms are natural features formed by rivers, the sea, ice and volcanoes. Examples of landforms are plains, mountains, plateaus, hills, valleys, cliffs, ridges, etc Processes, such as erosion, landslides, earthquakes, and volcanoes, that shape and change the landforms around us. Examples of the physical features. CLASS ACTIVITY 2) Human geography - is about what people do, where they live, how they make money and the effects of human interactions with each other and the planet. Human geography includes; Population geography - looks at the distribution of people over the earth’s surface. Settlement geography - is about where people live and how these places grow in size. Migration- why people make the choice to move Economic geography - looks at how people earn a living. It about industry, jobs and wealth. Human geography looks at quality of life. Quality of life means how happy or content people are with their lives and their environment where they live. Human features.
