You also learned the different artists and their contributions to the Philippine music. Here, you will discuss the Philippine contemporary music. You are going to identify the works, musical styles, and contributions of 20th Century composers. What’s New/What Is It The picture imposes a strong message that Philippine music is a mixture of different culture and movement. Based on the picture, what do you think are the characteristics of 20th century music? https://cutt.ly/ajp3c3Z According to National Artist Ramon Santos, PhD, contemporary music in the Philippines refers to the compositions that have adopted ideas and elements from 20th century art music in the West, as well as the latest trends and musical styles in the entertainment industry. When Philippines was colonized by Spain and America from the early 1500s to the late 1800s, it was unpreventable that Western compositional techniques found their way into the works of Filipino composers. But 20th century Filipino composers have managed to retain some traditional elements in their assimilation of Western techniques. In fact, they have become the strongest foundations of what we now known as Philippine music. Twentieth Century Composers FRANCISCO B. BUENCAMINO SR. (1883 – 1952) Born on November 5, 1883 in Bulacan. Son of a church organist and singer. Founder of Buencamino Music Academy. Known for formulaic and jolly musical style Compositions include Harana, Pandanggo ni Neneng, Collar de Sampaguita, Dulces las Horas, Mayon. https://cutt.ly/djaZa 6I 4 Francisco Santiago (1889 – 1947) Known as the “Father of Kundiman.” His music was Romantic in style, with folk materials. He composed several works with Kundiman (Anak-Dalita) as the most famous piece. It was sung upon the request of King Alfonso XIII before the Royal Court of Spain in 1917. His other famous works are: Pakiusap, Madaling Araw, Sakali Man, Hibik ng Pilipinas, Ano Kaya ang Kapalaran, and https://cutt.ly/djaZa6I Aking Bituin. NICANOR ABELARDO (1893 – 1934) Was born on February 7, 1893 and known for his Kundiman and classical songs. Developed a style that combined European romanticism with chromaticism. One of the “Triumvirate of Filipino Composers. His best-known compositions include Mutya ng Pasig, Nasaan Ka Irog, Cavatina for Violoncello, and Magbalik Ka Hirang. https://cutt.ly/djaZa6I ANTONIO J. MOLINA (1894 – 1980) First national artist for music and is considered one of the “Triumvirate of Filipino Composers.” Began his music career as an orchestral soloist at the Manila Grand Opera House. His musical style is more on Romantic style. Received the “National Artist for Music” award in 1973. He passed away on January 29, 1980. Best known for his poignantly romantic serenade for violin and piano Hatinggabi and Malikmata. https://cutt.ly/djaZa6I 5 HILARION RUBIO (1902 – 1985) A composer, music teacher, conductor, and clarinetist, and is known as a “romantic nationalist.” Became a conductor of opera at the Manila Music School in 1936. COL. ANTONINO BUENAVENTURA (1904 – 1996) Was a renowned composer, conductor, and teacher. Further developed his musical abilities at the Conservatory of Music, University of the Philippines (UP) at the age of 19. A band conductor at Philippine Military Academy. Restored the Philippine Constabulary Band in 1945, which was reputedly likened to a symphony orchestra. Now, you will be acquainted with the remaining sets of Philippine contemporary musicians, their musicals styles and major compositions. What’s New/What Is It Philippine music has truly evolved from its indigenous roots to its contemporary form. It was a mixture of different musical movements and influences. Some of the musicians are product of these different musical thoughts from the West and was fascinated by different dynamics and harmonies. But they were still able to create their own harmony depicting Filipino spirit and culture. Here is the second set of 20th century composers: RODOLFO S. CORNEJO (1909 – 1991) Started formal music lessons at the age of six. At the age of 14, 26 of Cornejo’s compositions were already listed by the United Publishing Company Inc. His compositional output includes A la Juventud Filipina, Bailes de Ayer, Caprice on a Folksong, Cello Sonata, Ibong Adarna. His works are more on operas and concertos. He composes the music for the documentary film on President Quezon’s funeral. https://cutt.ly/djaZa6I FELIPE PADILLA DE LEON SR. (1912 – 1992) Painter turned musician. Decided to study formally and enrolled at the Conservatory of Music, University of started doing musical arrangements. Later, he wrote music for the Zarzuela. Known as a nationalist composer who expressed the Philippines' cultural identity through his compositions. He composed Pasko na Naman and Noche Buena. https://cutt.ly/djaZa6I 8 LUCIO SAN PEDRO (1913 – 2002) Since his elementary days, he started composing. Known as a “Romantic Nationalist”. Incorporated Philippine folk elements in his ] compositions and is known for his “Nationalistic Symphonic Poem.” His chords have a rich expressive tonality, as represented in his well-loved Sa Ugoy ng Duyan, a lullaby melody sung by his mother. https://cutt.ly/djaZa6I ROSENDO E. SANTOS JR. (1922-1994) At age 11, he started composing band marches, instrumental, and vocal scores, as well as music for Catholic masses. As a UNESCO scholar, he was awarded the “Philippine Composer of the Century” after receiving the “Composer of the Year Award” in Manila in 1956 and 1957. CIPRIANO “RYAN” CAYABYAB (1954- present) A popular contemporary composer who also has classical style in his compositions. Among his numerous compositions are the award-winning Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika (1978), as well as the modern zarzuela Alikabok (2003).
