Why or why not? ### Image 1: A painting of a starry night. ### Image 2: A drawing of two boys, one pulling a toy train with a string, the other pulling a real train with a string. ### Image 3: Two images, one showing the word "CHAOS" spelled out with small objects and the other showing the same objects arranged in an abstract pattern. ## The Features of Art - Man creates Art. - Art exists with Man. - Art imitates. - Art interprets. - Art expresses and communicates. - Art affects, delights and evokes a reaction. ## Understanding Art - Marcos (2006) - various meaning of art - **Ability** - human capacity to create things of beauty and things that stir us - **Process** - Art encompasses acts such as drawing, painting, sculpture, designing buildings and using camera to create. - **Product** - completed work or final product - Art: An introduction to Humanities (Cerbo et.al, 2010). - **Art as skill and mastery** - Mastery that is manifested in the outstanding product of an endeavor which is an expression of man's ideas and emotions. - **Art as a process or product of a creative skill** - Because it involves arranging the aesthetics elements in an artistically interesting and appealing manner. These include sculpture, painting, music, literature, architecture, dance and theater. - **Art as a universal language** - The language of art is diverse. - Literature uses colorful words, imagery, figurative language. - Music uses melody, harmony, dynamics and other elements. - Dance makes use of graceful movements and choreography. - Theater uses most, if not all, of the elements of other art forms. - Painting, sculpture, and architecture share the visual elements of color, line, shape, form, space and texture. - **Art as a representation of reality** - According to Aristotle - art is a reflection or mirror of reality. - Traditional idea is art as imitation of life. - Plato - the essence of a thing is more 'real' than the thing itself. - Some advocate that reality is not what the physical make-up of it but what it stands for, its essence, its reality - **Art reflects the characteristics of a period.** - Medieval Period - Church initiated the spiritual truths depicted in all artworks. - **Byzantine** - Hagia Sofia, (eye-ya SO-fia) Turkey & St. Catherine’s Monastery, Egypt. - **Gothic** - St. Patricks, NYC - **Romanesque** - St. Vitale, Ravenna, Italy - **Art of the Early Middle Ages** - **Justinian as world conqueror** (Barberini Ivory) - **mid-6th Century Ivory** - 1 ft. 1 1/2 in. x 10 1/2 in. - **Renaissance Period** - Is more defined and realistic rendition of the human body in the visual arts. It focused on the three-dimensional reality landscapes in painting. - **Realism & Expression** - **Realism:** showing scenes as they actually appear. - **Expression** is different depending on the individual and the scene. - **Classicism:** Greek and Roman influence where perfect proportion is the ideal. - **Humanism**: emphasizes reason, scientific inquiry, and human fulfillment in the natural world. - **Define Chiaroscuro:** The use of extreme contrast between light and dark to create a dramatic effect. - **Sfumato:** The blurring or softening of sharp outlines by gradually blending one tone into another - **Modern Period** - Idealistic search for truth and the realization that it is not attainable. This manifested by varied experimentations of artistic expressions. - **Pablo Picasso**: Woman with a Flower (1932) - **Franz Marc:** Animal Destinies (1913) - **Gustav Klimt:** The Kiss (1907-8) - **Art shows the manner of existence of the people of long ago.** - **Art shows awareness of the people during the Old Stone Age who lived in caves.** - Ex: Rock Painting. - **Cave Painting** The document is a presentation about the definition of art, encompassing its history, the elements of art and its different forms.
