# Contemporary Art Forms and Their Practices from Various Regions This video is entitled *Contemporary Philippine Arts from the Region*. It is all about arts produced by Filipino artists in the present period. Understanding the arts will enlighten you about different cultures and traditions throughout the Philippines. ## Defining Contemporary Art The term **“Contemporary Art”** refers to any work created by a living artist. It has dramatically changed from the 20th century into the 21st century. This video will introduce you to famous artists, sculptors, architects, actors, authors, and musicians and their works in order for you to know more about Philippine arts, cultures, and traditions. ## What is Art? - What is **Art**? - What is **CONTEMPORARY ART**? - How does it differ to **MODERN ART**? **Art** can be defined as the expression of creativity and imagination using various techniques and media to produce works that fulfill a variety of purposes. **Artists** are people who create art in any art form. ## Modern vs. Contemporary - The term **modern** is complex. - It does not only refer to the current moment, but also to an epoch. - It means both **today** and the **recent past**. - **Modern art** places value on things appreciated by Western society: - Openness to the new. - Vitality. - Sensitivity, awareness and relevance to the present situation. - **Contemporary art**, on the other hand, is the most recent part of modern art. It's not distinct and is a part of modern art. ## Modern Art (1860-1970) - There is no exact definition of modern art. - There is no one style. - Most scholars agree that the term applies to art produced roughly during the years 1860-1970. - Artists who practice in this **“style”** generally reject Renaissance-based convention in favor of the new and experimental. They experimented with materials, subject matter, technique and developed new theories about art, its role in the modern world, and the function of the artist. ## What is Contemporary Art? - **Contemporary** means "of our time" (now). - It is defined as **Art made after 1940**. - It is art made with non-traditional materials. Contemporary art uses all kinds of media: any and every material, installation, video, land art. - It doesn't have to be shown inside a gallery. - The idea is often as important as the work. It is intended to make you think. ## The 7 Major Contemporary Art Forms 1. **Music**: Art form that appeals to the sense of hearing; composed by combining notes into harmony. 2. **Literature**: Art form of language through the combined use of words, creating meaning and experience. 3. **Theater**: Art form of performance.
