FSH in females = Function: Stimulates the growth and maturation of ovarian follicles (which contain the eggs) in the ovaries. Effect: Promotes the development of eggs and stimulates the production of estrogen by the ovarian follicles. LH in females = Function: Triggers ovulation, the release of a mature egg from the ovary. Effect: Leads to the formation of the corpus luteum (a structure in the ovary) which produces progesterone to support the endometrium for potential implantation of a fertilized egg. FSH in males = Function: Stimulates the Sertoli cells in the testes. Effect: Promotes spermatogenesis, the production of sperm cells, by supporting the maturation of sperm and the environment necessary for sperm development. LH in males = Function: Stimulates the Leydig cells in the testes. Effect: Promotes the production of testosterone, which is essential for the development of male secondary sexual characteristics and for regulating sperm production.
