Types of Sandwiches
- Hot Sandwiches: These sandwiches usually contain hot fillings like meats, grilled vegetables, or other warm ingredients. A slice of tomato or raw onion can add flavour.
- Open-Faced Hot Sandwiches: Built on one slice of bread, topped with hot fillings and sauce or cheese. French onion soup sandwiches are an example.
- Grilled Sandwiches: Grilled or toasted sandwiches are buttered and browned on a griddle, in an oven, or on a panini grill. They feature a crispy exterior and a warm, melted interior.
- Deep Fried Sandwiches: These sandwiches are coated in egg and breadcrumbs before being deep fried in hot oil. The result is crispy and flavourful.
- Filled Rolls, Focaccia or Pita Bread: Sandwiches made with bread rolls, often sliced open and filled with various ingredients like meats, cheese, vegetables, or spreads. Focaccia bread or pita pockets offer savory fillings.
-
Cold Sandwiches: Classic and Creative:
- Open-Faced Cold Sandwiches: One slice of bread with fillings like cheese or meat on top. Butter is spread lightly over the bread and ingredients are arranged artistically.
- Regular Cold Sandwiches: Made with two slices of bread, sometimes toasted and the crust removed. Butter, mayonnaise or spreads are used to prevent the bread from absorbing moisture.
-
Cold Sandwiches: Pinwheels and Tea Sandwiches:
- Pinwheel Sandwiches: Made from lengthwise sliced bread, preferably fresh cream bread. The thickness is typically about 3/8 inches thick. Smooth fillings like cream cheese, marmalade, or jams are ideal.
- Tea Sandwiches: Small, fancy sandwiches made from bread trimmed of crusts and cut into various shapes. They use delicate ingredients similar to canapés.
-
Cold Sandwiches: Multi-Decker and Wraps:
- Multi-Decker Sandwiches: Sandwiches made with more than two slices of bread. They feature multiple ingredients in their filling; the club sandwich is one example.
- Wrap/Rolled Sandwiches: Fillings are rolled up in a large flour tortilla or similar flatbread. The wrap can be served whole or cut in half.
