    • Canada Labour Code
    • WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)
    • OHSA (Occupational Health and Safety Act)

    Shop Conduct and Safety

    • Safety Precautions: caution around the workshop, transit areas, work areas, fire alarms, safety clothing, housekeeping, and effective communication. Awareness of safety standards is also essential.
    • Aircraft Danger Zones: propeller arc, exhaust, jet aircraft intake and exhaust, rotor wing aircraft (rotor arc, and tail rotor).
    • Fragile and Sensitive areas on aircraft: Electrical grounding lugs and wires, fuel tanks, protruding objects (like antennas), locks for control surfaces, sharp surfaces (flaps, ailerons, open cowlings).
    • Shop Conduct: adhere to workplace safety rules and regulations while working in the shop and on/around aircraft.

    General Safety Precautions and Procedures

    • Personal Apparel: Most companies have a prescribed dress code with companies providing uniforms or coveralls. Some provide safety equipment such as steel-toed footwear. Proper, clean-fitting clothing is required. Cotton-based clothing is more effective against fire hazards than synthetic fabrics like rayon, nylon and polyester.
    • Hair and Beards: Trimmed hair and beards are recommended for safety purposes. Long hair and beards pose risks of entanglement in machinery and fire hazards, particularly when dealing with respirators.
    • Jewelry: Jewellery can cause electrical shocks (open electrical circuits) if contacting 110-volt AC power, leading to severe or fatal burns. Rings caught in machinery can cause injury or amputation.
    • Personal Protection Equipment (PPE): Goggles, face shields, a hard hat, apron, coveralls, respirators (including hearing protection) are required PPE.
    • Respiratory Protection: Respiratory equipment can be uncomfortable; however, it's crucial for breathing safety. Exposure to airborne hazards affects workers immediately or over long periods.
    • Eye Protection: Visual safety is essential in aircraft maintenance to avoid potential hazards.
    • Hand Protection: Hand protection (wearing gloves) is required to reduce risks of injuries from contact with sharp or hot objects like steel or lumber. Gauntlets, specially temperature-resistant gloves, and rubber/plastic gloves are required.
    • Foot Protection: Use proper footwear to prevent injuries from heavy falling objects, sharp objects, hot sparks, or slag that may fall into shoes.
    • WHMIS: Identification, storage, and use of hazardous materials require WHMIS training and compliance.
    • Hand Tool Safety: Use the proper tool for the task, maintain tools in good working order, and secure them to prevent falling hazards, especially when working at heights.

    Fire Safety

    • Fire Triangle: Demonstrates the three conditions needed for a fire (fuel, oxygen, and heat).
    • Fire Extinguisher Classification: Different types of fire extinguishers (A, B, C, D, K) are suited for specific fire types.
    • Fire Extinguisher Use: The acronym PASS (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep) is a helpful guide for using extinguishers.
    • Fire Safety Procedures: Know fire location and use extinguishers appropriately; if unsure of the fire type, do not extinguish it.

    Aircraft Handling

    • Aircraft Handling, Jacking, Shoring, and Hoisting: Understand the different methods of aircraft handling (tow and taxi), jacking, shoring, and hoisting.
    • Emergency Procedures and Situational Awareness: Understand correct procedures and safety precautions before operating aircraft equipment, and for moving objects. Pay attention for potential hazards associated with moving objects in the workplace.
    • Always follow safety procedures before operating equipment and handle objects.
    • Maintain proper posture and position yourself with an exit or means of escape.
    • Never work under the influence of drugs, medications, or alcohol.
    • Report unsafe or defective equipment.

    Aircraft and Workplace Safety

    • Ground Clearance: Always consider ground clearance when moving aircraft or performing equipment actions, especially regarding aircraft propeller clearance from the ground.
    • Special Configurations: Understand special configurations of helicopters, including the need for special maintenance for specific aircraft.
    • Confined Spaces: Be aware of confined space hazards and practices. Know the precautions and standards.
    • Workplace Safety: Be alert, attentive to workplace safety and follow rules.
    • Additional Safety Considerations: Maintain situational awareness while working on or around aircraft and follow safety protocols throughout aircraft operations.
    • Emergency procedures.
