Ethical Responsibilities of Physical Therapists
- WCPT expects its member organizations to have a code of ethics or conduct, publish and promote it, and have procedures for monitoring and disciplining members who violate the code.
Ethical Principle 1: Respect for Patients
- Physical therapists respect the rights and dignity of all individuals.
- They undertake appropriate examination/assessment to develop a diagnosis and determine the prognosis/plan of care.
- They inform and discharge patients when goals are achieved or no further benefits can be obtained.
- They refer patients to other professionals if the diagnosis is unclear or treatment is not within their realm.
Ethical Principle 4: Providing Professional Services
- Physical therapists provide honest, competent, and accountable services.
- Everyone has the right to physical therapy services regardless of age, gender, race, etc.
- Patients have the right to:
- High-quality services
- Information about services
- Informed consent
- Confidentiality
- Access to their physical therapy data
- Health education and health promotion services
- Choosing who should be informed on their behalf
Ethical Principle 2: Compliance with Laws and Regulations
- Physical therapists comply with laws and regulations governing their practice in their country.
