Scoring and Winning a Match
- A set is won by the team that scores 25 points with a minimum lead of two points.
- In case of a 24-24 tie, play continues until a two-point lead is achieved.
- The match is won by the team that wins three sets.
- If the score is 2-2, the deciding set (the 5th) is played to 15 points with a minimum lead of 2 points.
The Toss
- The first referee carries out a toss before the match to decide upon the first service and the sides of the court in the first set.
- The winner of the toss chooses to either serve or receive the service or the side of the court.
- The loser takes the remaining choice.
Starting Line-up and Positions
- There must always be six players per team in play.
- The team's starting line-up indicates the rotational order of the players on the court.
- The positions of the players are numbered as follows:
- Front-row players: 4 (FL), 3 (FC), and 2 (FR)
- Back-row players: 5 (BL), 6 (BC), and 1 (BR)
Coaching and Time Outs

Playing Area and Equipment
- The playing area includes the playing court and free zone.

- The net is placed vertically over the center line, with a height of 2.43 m for men and 2.24 m for women.
Referees and Scorekeeping
- The 1st referee registers the data of the match and teams, and obtains the signatures of the captains and coaches.
- The 2nd referee assists the 1st referee and takes over in case the 1st referee is unable to continue.
- The scorer records the starting line-up, points scored, time outs, and player substitutions.

Line Judges
- Line judges stand in the free zone, 1 to 3 m from each corner of the court, on the imaginary extension of the line they control.
