Study Notes
Calicivirus
- Positively stranded RNA virus
Structure and Replication
- Produces one long single protein that is cleaved by viral proteases into smaller active constituents
- Replicates in the cytoplasm like all positive-stranded RNA viruses
Types of Calicivirus
- Norovirus (Norwalk virus) is the most common type
Epidemiology
- Commonly affects people in closed quarters (e.g. cruise ships, daycare centers)
- 90% of all diarrhea outbreaks on cruises are caused by norovirus
- Can be transmitted through consumption of contaminated shellfish or food handled by infected individuals
Clinical Features
- Symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
- Damages intestinal brush border
- Short incubation period (1-2 days)
- Illness resolves within 60 hours without complications
Viral Characteristics
- Resistant to chlorine and desiccation
