Study Notes

Deep Muscles of the Back

  • The deep muscles of the back include the intrinsic muscles, which are divided into two groups: intermediate deep (erector spinae group) and deep deep (transversospinales group)
  • These muscles extend from the base of the cranium to the sacrum and are associated with movements of the spinal column and control of posture

Spinal Column

  • The spinal column consists of vertebrae, which are divided into cervical, thoracic, and lumbar regions
  • Each vertebra has a specific structure, including a vertebral body, pedicle, transverse process, spinous process, and vertebral arch

Spinal Cord

  • The spinal cord is a long, thin, tube-like structure that extends from the base of the brain down to the lower back
  • It is divided into grey matter and white matter
  • Grey matter is found on the inside of the spinal cord and contains sensory and motor neurons
  • White matter is found on the outside of the spinal cord and contains nerve fibres

Internal Structure of Spinal Cord

  • The spinal cord has a posterior median sulcus and a central canal that is continuous with the ventricular system
  • The grey matter is divided into horns, including the dorsal horn, ventral horn, and lateral horn
  • The dorsal horn contains sensory nuclei, and the ventral horn contains motor neurons
  • The lateral horn is found in the thoracic region and contains sympathetic neurons

Ligaments of the Vertebral Column

  • There are seven key ligaments of the vertebral column, including the anterior longitudinal ligament, posterior longitudinal ligament, ligamentum flavum, interspinous ligament, supraspinous ligament, and intertransverse ligament
  • These ligaments provide stability and support to the vertebral column

Muscles of the Back

  • The muscles of the back include the deep muscles, which are divided into the erector spinae group and the transversospinales group
  • The erector spinae group includes the iliocostalis, longissimus, and spinalis muscles
  • The transversospinales group includes the semispinalis, multifidus, and rotatores muscles
