Ventilatory System
- The ventilatory system consists of three main processes: breathing, gas transport, and gas exchange.
Respiratory Tract
- The respiratory tract is a pathway through which air enters and exits the lungs.
- It consists of the nose, mouth, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and bronchioles.
The Exchange of Gases within the Lungs
- Gas exchange occurs in the alveoli, tiny sacs located at the end of bronchioles.
- Oxygen from inhaled air diffuses into the blood, while carbon dioxide, a waste product, diffuses out of the blood and into the exhaled air.
- The alveoli are surrounded by a network of capillaries, where gas exchange takes place.
Mechanics of Ventilation
- Ventilation involves the movement of air into and out of the lungs.
- The diaphragm, a dome-shaped muscle, contracts and relaxes to facilitate breathing.
- Inspiration occurs when the diaphragm contracts, causing the chest cavity to expand and air to enter the lungs.
- Expiration occurs when the diaphragm relaxes, causing the chest cavity to decrease in size and air to leave the lungs.
