    Study Notes

    Ventilation Systems

    • Vent pipe - provides air circulation in plumbing systems to relieve negative pressure on trap seals.
    • Yoke Vent (By-pass Vent): connects upward from a soil or waste stack below the floor and connects to an adjacent vent stack at a point above the floor and higher than the highest spill level - helps prevent pressure changes in the stacks.
    • Main Vent (Collecting Vent Line): the principle artery of the venting system; connects to all vent branches; acts as a support for Main Soil & Waste Vent
    • Circuit Vent (Loop Vent): starts in front of the highest fixture connection on a horizontal branch and connects to the vent stack; serves a battery of fixtures.
    • Individual Vent/Back Vent: vents a fixture trap and connects with the vent system above the fixture served or terminates in the open air.
    • Looped Vent: vertical vent connection on a horizontal soil or waste pipe branch at a point downstream of the last fixture connection; turns horizontal above the highest overflow level of the highest fixture.
    • Unit, Common, or Dual Vent: uses a vent pipe to serve two traps.
    • Wet Vent: a vent pipe where wastewater flows through.
    • Relief Vent: vertical vent line that provides additional air circulation between the drainage and vent systems or acts as an auxiliary vent on a specially designed system.
    • Local Vent: conveys foul air from plumbing fixture to outer air.
    • Dry Vent: vent that does not carry liquid or water-borne wastes.

    Vent Termination

    • VSTR (Vent Stack Through Roof) shall be vertically terminated at least 150mm above the roof and 300mm from any vertical surface nearby.
    • Each vent opening shall terminate at least 3m from any openable window.
