Urine Color and Associated Causes
- Dark yellow urine can be caused by dehydration or concentrated specimen, which is normal after exercise or in the first morning specimen.
- Yellow-green urine can be caused by bilirubin, which is indicated by a positive test for bilirubin.
- Yellow-green urine can also be caused by biliverdin.
- Port-wine colored urine can indicate the presence of porphyrins, but will have a negative blood test.
- Brown or black urine can indicate the presence of homogentisic acid, a condition known as alkaptonuria. This urine will become alkaline after standing.
- Black urine could indicate the presence of melanin.
- Pink urine can be caused by red blood cells, resulting in cloudy urine and a positive test for blood. Red blood cells will be visible under microscopic examination.
- Red urine can be caused by hemoglobin or myoglobin. Both will result in clear urine and a positive test for blood. Hemoglobin is associated with intravascular hemolysis, while myoglobin is associated with muscle damage.
