Study Notes
Urinary System
- The urinary system consists of structures that produce and conduct urine to the point of excretion.
Kidneys
- The kidneys typically extend from T12 to L3, with the right kidney situated slightly lower due to the presence of the liver.
- Each kidney is about the length of three vertebrae.
- The kidneys are enclosed by the fascia, also known as the Gerota's fascia or perirenal fascia.
Internal Kidney Structure
- The kidneys have a unique internal structure.
- The kidneys filter blood through the glomeruli.
- Blood passes through the glomeruli, which are surrounded by the glomerular (Bowman) capsule.
- A renal tubule is attached to each Bowman capsule.
Urine Formation
- There are three steps in the formation of urine:
- Glomerular filtration
- Tubular reabsorption
- Tubular secretion
Nephron
- The glomerulus and a renal tubule combine to form a unit called a nephron.
