Name the major organs of the urinary system.

The kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra are the main components of the urinary system. They work together to ensure efficient waste removal and fluid balance.

Study Notes

Urinary System Overview

  • The urinary system's primary function is to filter blood and eliminate waste products in urine.
  • The system consists of six major organs: two kidneys, two ureters, one urinary bladder, and one urethra.
  • Kidneys are located in the upper posterior abdominal wall.
  • The right kidney is positioned at the level of T12 to L3, and the left kidney at T11 to L2.
  • The left kidney sits higher than the right kidney.
  • In women, the kidneys are positioned close to the ovaries.

Kidneys

  • Kidneys receive blood from the abdominal aorta, and the filtered blood returns to the vena cava inferior.
  • Blood filtration, removal of waste products, maintenance of electrolyte, acid-base balance, blood volume regulation, and production of erythropoietin (for red blood cell production) are functions of the kidneys.

Ureters

  • The ureters are tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder.
  • Each ureter is about 25–30 cm long.
  • The ureters pass through the linea terminalis and enter the pelvis minor before reaching the bladder.

Urinary Bladder

  • The urinary bladder is a reservoir for urine.
  • Its normal capacity is about 220 mL, although it can hold up to 500 mL.
  • Located posterior to the symphysis pubis in females, while in males it is anterior to the rectum.

Urethra

  • The urethra carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body.
  • The urethra's length varies between males (15 to 20 cm) and females (3 to 5 cm).
  • It contains internal and external sphincter muscles, controlling urination.
  • In males, the urethra has three parts: prostatic, membranous, and spongy sections.
