Study Notes
Kidney Structure
- The renal pelvis branches out into two or three extensions called the major calyces, which further branch into the minor calyces.
- The renal hilum is the entry and exit site for structures of the kidneys: vessels, nerves, lymphatics, and ureters.
Urethra Structure
- The urethra has three openings: the opening into the urethra at the apex of the trigone, the internal urethral orifice, and the external urethral orifice.
- The mucosal lining of the urethra is transitional epithelium.
Urethral Sphincters
- The internal urethral sphincter is a band of smooth (involuntary) muscle that encircles the opening into the urethra.
- The external urethral sphincter is a ring of skeletal (voluntary) muscle that encircles the urethra where it goes through the pelvic floor.
Urethral Regions
- The membranous urethra is a short region that penetrates the pelvic floor and enters the penis.
- The spongy urethra is the longest region of the urethra.
This quiz covers the structure and components of the kidneys and urethra, including the renal pelvis, calyces, renal hilum, and urethral openings.
